This CTEC continuing education (CE) needs to be taken from an approved education provider. 15 of the hours need to cover the federal tax curriculum, with the remaining five hours focusing on the California tax curriculum. Fortunately, you have options to meet these CE requirements for tax preparers.
And that means you need to take the required California 60-hour tax course to get registered with CTEC and you need to take CTEC continuing education courses to renew your registration each year. That might leave you with questions. How do you find a California tax preparer course CTEC has approved?
To renew online, all of your education must have been electronically reported to CTEC by your education provider. If your education is not showing in your CTEC account, call your education provider(s) and have them upload the hours electronically into the CTEC database.
Enrolled agents must obtain 72 hours of continuing education every three years. A minimum of 16 hours must be earned per year, two of which must be on ethics. Enrolled agents must use an IRS approved CE provider.
Generally speaking, CPAs, Attorneys, Enrolled Agents and anyone employed by these individuals are exempt from the Act. (For a full description of all requirements to be exempt see Section 22258).
