This paper explores the social dimensions of online learning – the ways in which learners interact and communicate with other learners and their tutors using electronic communication networks. The context for this exploration is a module provided by a networked, and geographically dispersed, higher education institution. An evaluation of the module draws on the experiences of students and tutors participating in their first online course. Based on these experiences and the research literature, the paper discusses the extent to which face-to-face models of communication should be recreated in online contexts and the extent to which tutors should structure online interaction patterns and modes of discourse. Also examined is the way in which online learning leads to new ‘hybrid’ and ‘converging’ styles of communication and to the intermixing of academic and personal discourses. Overall, it is argued that the social context of online learning is qualitatively different from face-to-face learning and that this has significant implications for online learning design.
This study presents the results obtained from a literature review on Web-based instructional design models in order to form a basis for Web-based course design practices. The pioneering studies in literature mainly focused on the components of Web-based instruction and how to direct learning processes in an interactive environment. The studies that proposed design models for Web-based courses were generally based on literature, so they did not sufficiently reflect how the components of a model would be implemented in design practices. In the relevant literature, studies based on authentic design cases are limited. These studies, in which design efforts and processes are described in narrative form, did not go beyond specific contexts and could not be regarded as models. Consequently, there is a need for more studies that provide guidance on how design instructions should be implemented so as to address and resolve the problems that may be encountered in this process.

This article is an evaluation of the journey undertaken by participants on the Continuing Intercultural Professional Development in Europe (CIPDE) project, 2007–2009. The project provided participants with opportunities for online learning in order to facilitate reflection on practice and educational contexts. The contention is that the co-construction of shared meanings lies at the very heart of the process of intercultural learning, creating a shared culture of ideas. The blended synchronous teaching and learning mode is gaining currency in higher education, while its effects on students’ and instructors’ experiences are yet to be fully explored. Little research has been done to contextualize the teaching and learning effects of this teaching and learning mode. This paper reports a qualitative study of the experiences of simultaneously teaching online and face-to-face students in an engineering course. It aims to gain better understandings of the effects on the students’ learning and instructor's teaching in terms of 3 dimensions: instructional, social and learning, in the advent of information and communication technology. What teaching and learning effects were revealed in the blended mode? How did the effects impact on attaining the intended learning outcomes? This paper focuses on the potential of blended synchronous teaching and learning effects for quality educational experiences. The results reveal that (1) there were different teaching and learning effects on the blended synchronous instruction; (2) an unexpected pattern of interactions emerged in the blended synchronous communication; and (3) both the online and face-to-face students attained similar learning outcomes. This paper concludes that universities adopting blended synchronous learning need to provide sufficient support for both the students and instructors in the instructional, social and learning dimensions.
Executive Summary Social networking technologies are used by millions of individuals around the globe to foster dia-logue and share all types of information. It is therefore common to see that campuses abound with students embracing these technologies, sharing everything from personal experiences to general interests and current events with their immediate and extended social circles. Unfortunately, the adaptation of institutional course management system (CMS) software has not been so progres-sive, and the inclusion of these popular and powerful technologies, which have the potential to foster learning and interaction from a social context, remain somewhat absent from popular CMS platforms, such as Blackboard and Angel. An objective of Design Science Research (DSR) is to develop technology-based solutions for im-portant and relevant problems. Based on the principles of DSR, we developed software that inte-grated social technologies into CMS platforms, and the result of our DSR study is the design, construction, and implementation of a comprehensive online learning community (OLC) that in-tegrates microblogging with traditional blogging. As a result, students now have the ability to use their personal Twitter accounts to bring new information into the course OLC, where they can extend the conversation through more traditional blogging and blog commenting features, which have shown great success in fostering learning and social interaction within an OLC. Our soft-ware design carefully reflects our theoretical model, which includes theories of Constructivism, Social Presence Theory, and Activity Theory. Each theory offers important guidelines for how individuals use technology to learn and interact within an OLC environment. To measure the impact of our software, we implemented the OLC across upper-division under-graduate courses in information systems with the goal of fostering higher levels of learning and social interaction. The results show that students' experience microblogging was positive and the software helped to foster information sharing and information exploration. From a design per-spective, we discovered that directly integrating microblogging with traditional blogging with our OLC did not result in a system that was "more than the sum of the parts," although it did result in important insights for future design it-erations.
