In 1864 at the age of 14 Lipton booked passage on a ship from his native Scotland to New York City. He was unable to find work and headed south. This was while the Civil War was raging. He finally came to the area around Charleston. He got work on a rice plantation. In the wake of the Civil War, southern plantations often hired immigrant laborers to replace slaves. He worked in the fields for a while and than returned to New York City,and began work with a successful grocer. In 1869 he returned to Glasgow, Scotland and took over his parent's grocery. Within a few years Lipton had several grocery stores.#N#Lipton later went to Ceylon and bought up several coffee plantations and began planting tea bushes.
