When Lukaku complained of racist behaviour by Slavia Prague fans in the Champions League, the Czech side denied such chanting happening – and instead called on Lukaku to apologise for the accusation. We must reject that there has been racist chanting of the whole stadium.
There are a number of reasons to be encouraged: the racist chants from some Millwall fans were quickly reported by fellow fans who did not tolerate the behaviour, players are taking it upon themselves to compel change and governing bodies are increasing their minimum sanctions for players found guilty of discrimination.
The FA has also fined Millwall FC £10,000 over alleged racist chanting from the club’s supporters in their FA Cup fourth-round fixture last season. Millwall was charged with a breach of FA Rule E20, under which the club is held responsible for the actions of its supporters in the event that they engage in abusive behaviour. The written reasons given in the case refer to a “short-lived incident” involving 14-seconds of chanting by a small section of the crowd. The chanting stopped after objections from other supporters sitting in the same area.
Asking athletes how you can meet their needs (rather than assuming) is the best way to combat disability discrimination in sports. Solutions. Make modifications. Modifying the teaching style, rules, equipment and environment of a sport can make it more accessible for athletes with disabilities.
LGBTQ Discrimination in Sports. The USA ranks worst in homophobia in sports according to Out On the Fields, the first-ever international study on the subject. LGBTQ athletes often face physical abuse, verbal threats, cyberbullying and exclusion from team social activities.
Even if they are not being malicious, people may leave out athletes with disabilities because they don’t want to do the extra work to accommodate them.
In 2018, the University of Central Florida’s Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport recorded 52 instances of racial discrimination in sports in the United States alone. Internationally, they noted 137 racist acts. These numbers are up from 41 and 79 acts, respectively.

Because their games are scheduled for less desirable times and are barely discussed in the media, women’s professional sports teams earn much less than their male counterparts, as their wages are revenue-based. Female athletes also have to deal with how they are perceived by the public.
Athletes may be harassed by opponents and teammates if they are even chosen for the team at all. Less direct forms of discrimination, such as not accommodating each player’s religious needs, can be just as harmful.
As more questions and concerns about head injuries arose in professional football, a commission created by the NFL in 1994 recommended an independent scientific investigation to “foster better understanding of the causes, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of concussion” [11]. This did not happen, however. The NFL formed the Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (MTBI) Committee, made up of NFL team medical personnel and outside medical specialists in biomedical engineering, neurology, and neurosurgery and chaired by Elliot Pellman, a physician for the New York Jets who specialized in rheumatology and had little training in diagnosing and treating head injuries. During Dr. Pellman’s tenure, the MTBI Committee published a 13-part study that ultimately denied the possibility of serious head injuries in NFL football [12]. The committee found that a large percentage of players appeared to the team physician to recover fully from concussion within an hour and that postconcussion signs resolve more quickly in NFL players than in nonathletes [13]. As one report noted, “NFL players are a highly conditioned, physically fit population accustomed to playing with pain and highly motivated to return to play as soon as possible” [13]. Furthermore, the MTBI Committee asserted that it found no cases of CTE in NFL players [14].
Professional football players receive repeated head injuries during their careers, these injuries cause CTE, and CTE results in debilitating conditions that permanently incapacitate players or ultimately lead to their deaths.
Damages are often determined according to a person’s lost wages; the costs of past, present, and future medical care; and the pain and suffering the person endures as a result of a trauma [24]. This too may be a hard to demonstrate convincingly.
In 2006, after the wife of a former NFL player wrote to the NFL commissioner detailing her husband’s mental and physical decline and the financial hardships their family had endured, the NFL responded with a plan to financially assist some former players [15].
Five years later would come a second troubling death when Dave Duerson, a former safety for the Chicago Bears, took his own life [2].
