The American Kayaking Association (AKA) is in no way associated or affiliated with the American Canoe Association (ACA), whatsoever. However, the AKA offers ACA programs through certified ACA instructors; following the guidelines and protocol set forth by the ACA. Our goals, passion and devotion to educating the general public is no different.

Instructor Maintenance Requirements: By the end of the 4 year certification period, the following minimum maintenance requirements must be met in order for the certification to be renewed for an additional 4 years: Maintain annual ACA membership and SEIC registration.
The best way to ensure visibility to boaters is to mount an elevated white light on the aft deck. Ideally, the light should shine continuously in 360 degrees and be unobstructed by the kayaker or seat. If you don't do much paddling at night, use a suction cup mount instead of affixing the mount to the deck.
In waterways restricted to kayaks and canoes, moonlight and starlight should be considered adequate unless artificial light is necessary. Red/green running lights (or "sidelights") are not required on a kayak, canoe or other "vessel under oars" in the United States or on international waters.
Almost all vessels are required to have at least one working, watertight flashlight on board. This is especially true for small boats not equipped with navigation lights. length, a watertight flashlight qualifies as navigation lights.
