This course is designed for those interested in theatre and performance, African American studies, history, and culture. Students will study influences on the development of black theater and performance in the USA as well as processes for preserving, curating, and exhibiting culture in institutions, examining how museum concepts intersect and/or collide with representations of black history and culture. In collaboration with the Hattiloo Theatre in Memphis and the DeVos Institute of Arts Management, who are drafting plans for an institution devoted to black theatre practitioners, students will determine and develop content for an interactive venue. They will consider strategies for the use of technology and live exhibits, involving black communities in exhibits and curation, and providing access to diverse communities. Projects and findings will be shared with the institution’s developers and will beconsidered in their ongoing plans. In this course, we will examine Improvisation, Audition Process, Monologues, Duets and Group Scenes, Theatre History, Movement, Voice and Diction, Playwriting, Shakespeare, and Theatre Literature. Students in this course participate in The Texas Renaissance Theatre Contest, The Alley Theatre Education workshops, and community events.
Technical Theatre I is a full year theatre introductory survey course designed for the technical theatre student interested in fulfilling their Fine Arts credit. In this course, we will examine Theatre History, Set Design and Construction, Stage Lighting, Costume Design, Marketing, Theatre Safety, and Theatre Literature.
The Sharpstown high school band consists of various ensembles such as, Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Beginner Band, Marching Band , and Chamber Ensembles. During the summer and fall, students participate in the Marching Band. The Marching Band class covers .5 of the Physical Education credit requirement for graduation. In the spring, students participate in one of our concert band ensembles. These ensembles cover 0.5 of the Fine Arts requirement for graduation. The band program also includes an opportunity for beginners. Students who desire to be in band but have no experience playing an instrument are high encouraged to join beginning band.
Dance IV. For students with at least 3 years of dance training. Dance IV will offer performance opportunities and training in a variety of dance styles as well as methods instruction in composition, choreography, production, and dance history. This class is for juniors and seniors only.
The Wind Ensemble is the highest performing ensemble in the band program. Students in this ensemble are committed to success in their individual playing abilities. Each ensemble member strives for excellence through teamwork and collaboration. The Wind Ensemble rehearses during the school day and students are expected to attend after school sectionals a couple times a week. Attendance and active participation at all rehearsals and performances is mandatory. Conflicts will be dealt with on an individual basis.
