Why would the vast majority of students in a class be consistently late posting to the discussion board?

Last week, I posted right before the due date (Thursday at 11:59), and the discussion board was 100% vacant. I later saw that most of my classmates had posted Friday afternoon or even on Saturday.

Every assignment I keep getting marked on my citations. The first time I did not have citations OK that was my bad the second time they were not in alphabetical order OK I can fix that the next time I did not have any credible sources of information.
