A Course in Miracles (also referred to as ACIM or the Course) is a 1976 book by Helen Schucman. The underlying premise is that the greatest " miracle " is the act of simply gaining a full "awareness of love's presence" in one's own life.
In 1972, the dictation of the three main sections of the Course was completed, with some additional minor dictation coming after that point. Kenneth Wapnick helped edit the book and founded the Foundation for A Course in Miracles.
The Course consists of three sections: the "Text", "Workbook for Students", and "Manual for Teachers". Written from 1965 to 1972, some distribution occurred via photocopies before a hardcover edition was published in 1976 by the Foundation for Inner Peace.
Foundation for Inner Peace. A Course in Miracles (also referred to as ACIM or the Course) is a 1976 book by Helen Schucman. The underlying premise is that the greatest " miracle " is the act of simply gaining a full "awareness of love's presence" in one's own life.
The study and learning of A Course in Miracles can be like climbing a ladder. Each rung represents a new realm of understanding where beautiful pearls of wisdom have more and more depth the higher one climbs.
A Course in Miracles starts off with a text that lays out the theory or theology. There is then a Workbook with 365 daily lessons—one lesson for every day of the year. It’s very practical. Kind of like when we were in high school, maybe we had chemistry class and would go into the lab to actually perform the experiments with the elements to actually see how it works practically in our life. That’s what the Workbook is about, clearing away the ego debris from the mind and learning how to trust in the Spirit and let go of judgment, criticism, and condemnation.
ACIM is teaching us about our perfect equality; that everyone and everything is perfectly equal. We are reflections of this Divine Oneness.
It wants to have some kind of power, turn it into something prideful, some kind of concept that’s built upon even the ideas of healing.
The struggle comes in when we drift back into the human realm of consciousness and awareness; it’s back into separation . So, this is a practical curriculum in training the mind to higher states of consciousness that pulls from three areas of study: psychology, Christianity, and education.
New experience comes from following A Course in Miracles’ intentional and careful structure. As the Course states: “A universal theology is impossible, but a universal experience is not only possible but necessary. It is this experience toward which the course is directed.” (C-in.2:5-6) This simplicity becomes evident when studying ACIM.
Jesus says in A Course in Miracles, the ego is a mask that has been laid across the face of Christ. It’s an attempt to have a false identity —to be disguised from who you really are, which is Spirit.
A Course in Miracles (commonly referred to as “ACIM” or “the Course”) is a tool, arranged as a self-study course, designed to train the mind to consistently think with Jesus and/or the Holy Spirit. Through a disciplined practice of practically applying its principles, a consistent state of happiness and peace comes to the mind of the student.
With the aid of Ken Wapnick, Robert Skutch, Judith Skutch Whitson, and philanthropist Reed Erickson, “the Course” was published on June 26, 1976 (by the Foundation for Inner Peace) and has gone on to sell over 3 million copies in 25+ languages.
It consists of three books: a 669-page Text, a 488-page Workbook for Students, and a 92-page Manual for Teachers. The order in which someone chooses to use the books, and the ways in which they study them, depend on their particular needs and preferences.
A Course in Miracles is the name of a book that was written by a channeled spirit, who claimed to be Jesus. Described as “spiritual psychotherapy”, it’s been widely promoted by Oprah, and as of January 2008, she now has Marianne Williamson, the Course’s leading spokesperson, teaching this “Course” on her world-wide XM radio show.
A Course in Miracles asserts again and again that: A sense of guilt for having done “wrong” is an illusionary invention of our own minds, and is to be downplayed or overlooked as much as possible.
Text page 158, Line 2 – “The reality of everything is totally harmless, because total harmlessness is the condition of it’s’ reality.”
EVEN FOR THE NON-CHRISTIAN, THE VERY REAL DANGER of studying “A Course in Miracles” can clearly be seen in what the Course asks you to believe: Claiming that physical life on Earth is really just a “nightmare” the collective human race is having while in a state of psychic sleep, (text pg. 18 and throughout) the Course teaches that: everything you see around you is an illusion, (lesson #14 and throughout) that sin and guilt are not real but, “solely an invention in your own mind” (lesson #70) that, you can neither hurt others, nor be hurt (text pg. 96 and throughout) … that “ you can and should deny any belief that error can hurt you” … the false promise that: if you see your neighbor as sinless, “ you will be released entirely from all effects of sin” (text pg. 474) that “ the reality of everything is total harmlessness” (text pg. 158) … that you alone are the sole cause of anything hurtful that’s ever happened to you (lesson #23, #304, and throughout) … that, “ The world you see has nothing to do with reality. It is of your own making, and it does not exist.” (lesson #14 and throughout)
This is unfortunate, because many of the Church’s most trusted Catholic leaders-such as Fr. Mitch Pacwa and Fr. Benedict Groeschel - (Who has been quoted as saying, “A Course in Miracles has served to undermine authentic Christianity, more than just about any other work I can recall.”) — have warned the faithful for years, to stay away from this false teaching for the following reasons:
The teachings of A Course in Miracles have FAILED many, if not all, of the standard “tests of discernment” the Church has used for centuries, to distinguish a true and Godly spirit from a false one.
I’ve publicly stated my opinion, that “You cannot study A Course in Miracles without seriously jeopardizing your faith, and putting your mental, physical, and spiritual health at risk.”

A Course in Miracles was written as a collaborative venture between Schucman and William ("Bill") Thetford. In 1958, Schucman began her professional career at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City as Thetford's research associate. In 1965, at a time when their weekly office meetings had become so contentious that they both dreaded them, Thetford suggested to Schucman that "[t]here must be another way". Schucman believed that this interaction acted as …
Since it went on sale in 1976, the text has been translated into 27 languages. The book is distributed globally, spawning a range of organized groups.
Wapnick said that "if the Bible were considered literally true, then (from a Biblical literalist's viewpoint) the Course would have to be viewed as demonically inspired". He also declared "I often taught in the context of the Bible, even though it is obvious to serious students of A Course in Mi…
Two works have been described as extensions of A Course in Miracles, Gary Renard's 2003 The Disappearance of the Universe and Marianne Williamson's A Return to Love published in 1992. The Disappearance of the Universe, published in 2003 by Fearless Books, was republished by Hay House in 2004. Publishers Weekly reported that Renard's examination of A Course in Miracles influenced his book.
