What is signaling theory?

Signaling theory provides a fundamental framework to understand how information asymmetry between two parties is reduced under pre-contractual context ( Wells et al., 2011 ). In marketing research, signaling theory is widely used in explaining how sellers use observable signals to convey products' unobservable quality to consumers, thus influence their product evaluation and purchase decision ( Kirmani & Rao, 2000 ). Merchants who sell experience products use signaling strategy more frequently because there exists an apparent and bridgeable information asymmetry prior to consumers' purchase ( Wells et al., 2011 ).

What is online user rating?

Online user rating is a persuasive signal for consumers and is typically associated with products' sales performance ( Ivanov & Sharman, 2018 ). From the perspective of signaling theory, the rating is with high observability. It is the most direct and non-misleading feedback of consumers based on their consumption experience, which can help users judge product quality ( De Langhe et al., 2016 ). While most studies support an encouraging effect of rating on sales, some have found an insignificant or even negative impact ( Wang, Liu, & Fang, 2015 ). In the context of online knowledge content market, we expect that a high rating has a positive impact on content sales. On the one hand, the rating score that balances the review of many consumers is more likely to indicate the real quality of a product ( Filieri et al., 2018 ). On the other hand, ratings can be judged by consumers quickly and accurately. From a cognitive view of signaling theory, the cognitive cost of understanding the rating score is low, so this signal gains more attention from consumers and has more impact on their decisions ( Drover, Wood, & Corbett, 2018 ). Therefore, we propose the following:

What is Zhihu Live?

We use Zhihu Live.com as the data source of paid online courses. Zhihu Live, a sub-website of the online Q&A community Zhihu, is one of the most popular paid knowledge platforms in China which has launched more than 7000 live courses since May 2016. Compared with course providers on Coursera, most lecturers in Zhihu Live are practitioners who share experience and skills of their field. Course in these platforms is more inclined to be practical, focus on a simple, specific issue and costs relatively shorter time (few hours) to learn than the school curriculum.

What is self customizable online course?

Through self-customizable online courses, students can design more satisfying learning experiences that are more compatible with their needs and preferences. By choosing an assignment mix that provides more focused and personally relevant course content, students can balance their diverse interests and learning goals against course/program-specific learning objectives. A review of relevant literature and anecdotal evidence gleaned from multiple sections of a self-customizable marketing research course suggest a series of research propositions, several course-design recommendations, and several future research studies.

What is the purpose of the present study?

The present study aims to investigate the perspective of students in the business course on innovation and the use of new teaching technologies in undergraduate learning and empowerment for the labour market in a city in northeastern Brazil. The methodology study is qualitative, conducted through a questionnaire tech-nique with open questions with students from a higher education institution, graduates of the business course and others who have already completed and are looking for space in the labour market. The results obtained in the present study suggest a greater participation of the university in the articulation of its trained professionals with the local companies, serving as a support platform and in this way enabling some monitoring of these graduates at the entrance of the local market, through networks of contacts that bring together companies of recent graduates. The conclusion of the study is that there is a complex situation, that despite the difficulties imposed by the economic crisis and lack of local opportu-nities, the chance of getting a job is better for those who, in fact, absorb as much of the knowledge that the course offers and get their diploma.

What is the ARCS V model?

This chapter provides an overview of the major motivation theories, and examines how the ARCS-V model applies motivational theory to instructional design. The chapter also provides a cognitive framework to support aspects of the ARCS-V model. Special attention is given to course design and instructional practices aimed at reducing online student attrition and improving academic performance. Additionally, the chapter reviews research examining the utility of the ARCS-V model, as well as recommendations for implementation within the online modality.

What is SOLR in learning?

Student online learning readiness (SOLR) has been identified as being closely associated with the success of learning in online environments. Online learning orientations have also been used as a key intervention to support students. However, the evaluation practice and research of online learning orientation design are limited. This research studied the effects of an orientation course on SOLR, using a multiyear design-based research with a one-group pretest and posttest method as the evaluation measurement. The design and implementation of a self-paced orientation course in Canvas learning management system was detailed as the intervention. A 20-item SOLR questionnaire was selected as the pretest and posttest instrument. After the initial cycles, a sample of 2,590 college students were invited to participate in the 2017 orientation and respond to the pretest and posttest. Because separate consent forms were distributed and collected at the pretest and posttest stages, the researcher was able to use 445 pretest and 624 posttest datasets. The independent samples t-test results indicated statistically significant improvement of SOLR competencies. The exploratory factor analysis results also indicated changes of items associated with the SOLR constructs. The reliability coefficients of all subscales were > .90, with an increase in the reliability of the SOLR instrument as a whole from pretest (a = .92) to posttest (a = .95). Implications for the design and evaluation of online learning orientations and preparing student online learning readiness are discussed toward future design and implementation.
