If you have not met your streak, it will be greyed out. It will become lit once you have met your streak by completing your daily lesson. Keep your streak going and see how high you can go! Get a streak freeze to make sure you don't lose your streak when you forget to practice for a day.

A streak freeze is an item in the Lingot Store. It prevents the user from losing their streak when they fail to meet their daily goals. On the iOS app, it costs 200 gems.
They will activate the next day only after you complete a lesson. If you were to not complete a lesson two days in a row, the streak freeze would be saved for a time when you only miss one.Sep 3, 2020

It's a waste of time. In fact, it's just as bad as the education system Von Ahn criticizes. Duolingo outsources its translation services, allowing for awkward sentences to slip in undetected. And translation (the core of its platform) is already widely known to be an ineffective way to learn a language.

The first way to finish your Duolingo tree is by earning at least 1 crown in every skill on your tree. This is one of the best ways to use Duolingo because when you get to the end of your tree with 1 crown in each skill you get to earn your Duolingo Golden Owl!
There are a couple of ways that you can shortcut your way to finishing your Duolingo tree faster. If you click on a skill that you haven’t earned 5 crowns in yet, a small key icon will show up in the corner and you can choose to test out and earn the next crown.

Each skill usually has about 5 levels to work through, and therefore 5 crowns to collect. In theory, therefore, the more crowns you have in a skill, the more proficient you are in it. Now, with the introduction of the Legendary Level, you get the opportunity to earn an extra piece of Duolingo regalia — the legendary ‘purple crown’.
Put simply, a Legendary Level is designed to be the toughest level in a skill. To reach it, you need to complete four challenges without any hints or tips. It is, without a doubt, the ultimate test of how well you know a particular skill. But to fully understand Legendary Levels, we first need to know what a Crown Level is.
Duolingo will not make you fluent or a great speaking in your chosen language. It does not claim to do so either. Instead, Duolingo will teach the basics of a language, providing you with around 1500 words (about the same as a 6 year old) and acts as a great basis for further learning.
