NCC modules are assigned codes and are noted in the module description. You can only use an NCC module for maintenance that has an assigned specialty code for your certification specialty and specified by your education plan.
You are limited to using one article, book authorship or service as an NCC Self Assessment reviewer or monograph author per certification maintenance cycle.
NCC randomly selects for audit a percentage of credentialed professionals who are due to maintain their certification. All incomplete applications are automatically selected for audit. An audit requires the credentialed individual to submit copies of the program agenda with lecture descriptions or the lecture description along with certificates of continuing education being used for the purposes of maintenance. In addition, the audit requires a license or license verification upload that shows the current expiration date. NCC CE is automatically applied to your applications and does not require uploads. The notice of audit may come with your notice that your certification is due or you may be subject to an audit after you have submitted your certification maintenance application. If selected for audit and you fail to provide continuing education certificates and the program/lecture descriptions or fail to meet the deadline to submit additional documentation that would complete your application, your certification will lapse. The audit provides you with a two week window to submit the required documents. Please note that it is your responsibility to insure all contact information is current in your account so that you receive audit information.
Academic credit can be used to maintain the NCC certification credential. The content of the course must be related to the certification specialty area. Be specific in listing course titles, ex. course 104 is not acceptable. Remember content must relate to your specialty certification area.
For specialty focused conventions like AWHONN or NANN, use the specialty code that represents the specialty area of most of the presentations attended or if specific specialty content is needed, record only the sessions/presentations that are associated with that code and the corresponding hours.
For those who hold a core certification (RNC or NP-BC), you can take your CCI assessment for the next cycle up to 3 months prior to the start of your new certification cycle. However, no CE can be earned prior to the start of your new maintenance cycle.
For generic courses, the course has to relate to the population focus of the certification area. A course on hypertension in pregnancy could not be used to maintain neonatal certifications but would be acceptable for maintaining WHNP certification.

The certification maintenance program of the National Certification Corporation (NCC) is designed to provide its core and subspecialty certificants with a mechanism to demonstrate their continued specialty competence and professional development during each 3-year maintenance cycle. Core and subspecialty maintenance processes are structured to ensure that certificants are exposed to evolving scientific developments and evidence-based practice in the clinical aspects of their respective specialties. A key element in NCC’s maintenance approach is a focus on the core competency knowledge content as it is represented in the certification examination for each specialty or subspecialty with established updating timelines based on content validation and task analysis study data. Ongoing maintenance of certification demonstrates to the public and to the profession that the NCC-certified professional delivers a high standard of patient care within their chosen specialty area of neonatal, obstetric, gynecologic and/or women’s health. A certification maintenance approach of this nature not only validates knowledge, expertise and dedication to a specialty area of practice, but it also affords each certificant with a tangible recognition of their professional commitment. Maintenance is required for everyone certified by NCC, and the maintenance procedure is part of the certification program that certificants must meet to maintain their certification.
As certification accrediting bodies, ABSNC and NCCA have definitions for recertification and continuing competence. NCC’s definitions are in line with these for both continuing competence and maintenance of certification to include.
Continuing Competence: “Demonstrating specified levels of knowledge, skills, or ability not only at the time of initial certification but throughout an individual’s professional career demonstrating the ongoing ability to practice safely, effectively and ethically in a designated specialty .” (Adapted from the NCCA Standard 22, Nov. 2014)
Rationale for Maintenance of Certification. All certificants must maintain their credential on a three-year basis. The purpose of the program is to ensure that certificants continue to maintain their knowledge, abilities and skills in the designated specialty area. The three-year period was designated based on the belief that a timely renewal ...
