1. Mathematical skills expected for Biochemistry majors (after taking MATH 10a,b or equivalent) All majors will have taken algebra, geometry, and pre-calculus in high school, and many will have taken calculus. Some may have placed out of calculus with high AP scores.
Biochemistry is a lot easier than general or organic chem. The math requirement is far less and its more dependent on memorization, rather than rational problem-solving, to do well. Conceptualization, owing to a basic understanding of nutrition, also helps. So most students shouldn't fear it!

Any degree will give you a load of transferable skills so if you want to do a job that just requires a degree do one that interests you. Biochem is intense so if you don't enjoy it don't do it. If you plan to go into science or research then you need a basic degree and biochem is one of them.
You cannot be a medical doctor with a biochemistry degree. Although if you study medicine it won't be as difficult as it will be for other students ( you'll have an advantage over other students because of the knowledge you must have gained).

Biochemistry, although tough, isn't as difficult as microbiology. This is because a lot of concepts from the subject are constantly revised when you take pathology and pharmacology (assuming you might be on a nursing or medical course).
Unless one of the special circumstances (see the answer to the first question above) applies to you, you are most likely better off taking general chemistry and introductory physics in your first year and not taking BIOL 14a/15b.
If you want to be a Biochemistry major, in your situation you should take MATH 5a (if needed) and MATH 10a in your first year and defer taking PHYS 11a,b until 2nd year. Instead of taking Physics in your first year, you should take 2 semesters of General Chemistry with lab and possibly BIOL 14a and BIOL 15b.
To complete the requirements for the biochemistry BS degree students take a series of advanced courses in biochemistry: BCHM 100a, 101a, 103b, 104a, and 104b. These courses are based on, and assume prior knowledge of, material from introductory biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics courses.
