They can see their individual assessment results, but the course total is not showing for some reason. Everything is unlocked and unhidden in the gradebook itself and 'Hide totals' is set to 'Show totals excluding/including hidden items'.

Moodle displays a Course total (or final grade) to students. The Course total can be based on calculated or aggregated grade items from the Moodle Gradebook or instructors can manually enter numeric grades to the Course total column.

The course total is the sum of the maximum grades from all aggregated items. When using the Natural aggregation method, it's important to note that: The faculty grade book shows point totals, not percent. The student report shows point totals and percent.
Restrict access settings allow you to control when an activity is available to students. When a graded activity is not only unavailable, but also hidden from students using Restrict access settings, students cannot see the grade for the activity.
Contribution to Course Total is what percent is earned toward a final grade with a particular grade item. Please note the difference between this and Calculated Weight: Calculated Weight is the potential, while Contribution is what has actually been earned.Dec 5, 2019

I would like to have the column "Course total" displaying the sum of the other columns in Grader report. The default value formulae is the average of the columns. I tried to set Aggregation in the admin block to "Sum of grades", but it didn't help. Any suggestions?
In addition to setting the aggregation method as Sum of grades, you will also need to change the Grade Display Type to Real for the Course total. Hopefully this will work for you!
If my administrator changes it to sum of grades does that mean that it will chage it for all of the courses inthe Moodle? I am the only teacher who wants total points and I can't seem to be able to get that. Please help.

If you change these setting won't it change how the gradebook reads the inputted grades? For example, to calculate only the grades with an entry, you have to use the weighted grade option with the setting to include only graded items. How would you get those results with the above information?
I am not sure I understand what you are trying to do, but if you are using straight sum of points (no weighted percentages), I have been trying to work through this myself. I am getting closer! Please see

There are different settings for each different view of the gradebook. So check that Hide Totals is not set on the user report...
Thanks for the response, Emma. Turns out it's a bit of a bug in Moodle - we hid the course total again and then unhid it and saved the changes, and that appears to have resolved it for now? Still doesn't solve the issue of why it's doing it though!

Also the "Course total" is not editable. I can not change it to letters (real)!
It is indeed not easy to figure out how to change the grade display type for the course total! I have just amended Grade letters and added " (For the course total, click the Edit then 'Edit settings' link at the top of the actions column, opposite the name of the course.)". I hope it helps.
I think we have a tracker item on this but if editing is on, the course total (2.8 or later) will only show as total points. Turn editing off and it will then respect the setting.

You can include the values of other grade items by using their ID number as references in your formulas. The ID number must be surrounded by double square brackets, for example if you have a grade item with Quiz.3 as ID number, you can refer this item using [ [Quiz.3]] in your calculation.

Note that various default options for the gradebook are set at system level by the administrator and can be marked as being overridable by you, or fixed. This means that the options will not always be set up the same way for every user when they see the grader report for the first time.
