In the case that the Academic Grievance Panel recommends that the grievance be heard by the Academic Grievance Committee, a copy of the recommendation, identified by complaint number, will be forwarded to the Office of Undergraduate Studies.
The written statement must specify the specific syllabus, departmental, college or university policy that the student alleges to have been violated. In addition, the student will secure, from the Office of Undergraduate Studies, a grievance checklist form.
The submission of fraudulent admissions credentials in the student's application or any other documents submitted for admission to Clemson University may result in initiation of action under the Policy and Procedure on Revocation of Academic Degrees. II. Academic Dishonesty in Coursework
While D or F grades in required courses may be eliminated before the course is repeated, any course used to meet a graduation requirement must be repeated satisfactorily at Clemson University. Both grades will remain on the transcript, degree progress report, and other official documents.
C-Fair indicates work of average or medium character. D-Pass indicates work below average and unsatisfactory, the lowest passing grade. F-Failed indicates that the student knows so little of the subject that it must be repeated in order that credit can be received.
The Academic Forgiveness Policy, or AFP, (revised 2019) allows an enrolled student seeking a Clemson University degree, with first term of enrollment fall 2013 through spring 2019 to eliminate from the GPA calculation up to three courses in which a D or F was earned.
You may retake the course in any future term if you have sufficient Forgiveness courses remaining. You may not receive transfer credit for the same course that you received Academic Forgiveness.
Basic Repeat Policies You can only repeat a course one time to replace a grade. Grades in third attempts of a course will not be calculated into your GPA, but will be shown on your transcript. If you earned a grade of D+, D, D-, or F, you must take your repeat for a letter grade.
Academic Probation: A student who fails to maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 2.0 or higher is placed on academic probation. No notation concerning probation will appear on the student's permanent record.
Undergraduate students may request a grade forgiveness (discount of a grade) in a repeated course by petition only. Courses may only be repeated if the grade earned is less than a "C". Petitions for Grade Forgiveness should be filed after completion of the course used to replace the previous course.
2.5 semester GPAHow is an academic plan monitored? Undergraduate students are generally required to maintain at least a 2.5 semester GPA with no W's, I's, or F's every semester of their academic plan. Graduate students are generally required to maintain at least a 3.0 GPA with no W's, I's, or F's every semester of their academic plan.
With a GPA of 4.43, Clemson requires you to be at the top of your class. You'll need nearly straight A's in all your classes to compete with other applicants. You should also have taken plenty of AP or IB classes to show your ability to excel in academic challenge.
Withdrew (W) indicates that the student withdrew from the course without a grade after the first two weeks of classwork and prior to the last seven weeks of classes, not including examination period. Proportionate time periods apply during summer and other shortened sessions. Pass (P) is equivalent to grade of “C”.
Limitations. The transcript displays the official record of classes students enroll in during school, so most grades cannot be changed or removed.
When Grade Forgiveness is applied to a student's record, the grade earned during the first attempt of the course is no longer factored in to the student's GPA but it will still appear on the student's transcript. In other words, the new grade replaces the old grade in the calculation of a student's GPA.
In many schools, if a student retakes a course, the most recent grade will replace the lower grade in the student's GPA. The earlier, lower grade will remain on the transcript, but will not be included in the GPA. Some schools, however, average the two grades and include the averaged grade in the GPA.
If a student believes that a procedural error in grading was made, the student should meet with the instructor. If the instructor does not agree that a procedural error was made, the student may meet with the department chair to discuss the grade grievance.
If you believe there has been a grading error, you should first speak directly with your instructor to try and resolve the issue.
Advocates may provide feedback on a student's written communication or statement to the department chair, or in instances where the student believes they have been unfairly treated, an advocate can help determine the best course of action. Feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns about these processes.
The Academic Grievance Committee hears all grievances involving the following: (a)allegations by undergraduate students against a faculty or staff member of discrimination in academics on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age, religion, disability, or veterans status (except in those cases where the grievance involves student employment); (b) grievances of a personal or professional nature involving an individual undergraduate student and a fac ulty member; and (c) claims by undergraduate students concerning the inequitability of final grades. (The only aspects of a final grade case that are grievable are claims by students of final grades being changed because of personal or professional reasons. Students may not grieve issues such as quality of instruction or the difficulty of testing, for example.) In all unresolved cases, the committee makes its recommendations to the President through the Provost. All proceedings of the committee are confidential. (For possible grievances arising from the inability to understand teachers whose first language is not English, the student must follow the English Fluency Policy referenced in the Student Handbook and Schedule of Classes .)
1. When, in the opinion of a faculty member, there is evidence that a student has committed an act of academic dishonesty, the faculty member shall make a formal written charge of academic dishonesty, including a description of the misconduct, to the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Academic Services. At the same time, the faculty member may, but is not required to, inform each involved student privately of the nature of the alleged charge.
If it cannot be resolved with the professor, the student will need to appear before a grade appeal board. The board will be composed of faculty and students.
A grade appeal is a formal challenge of your course grade. There are a typically a specific set of circumstances in which one can be filed. Many schools have a variation of the following grade appeal categories: A technical error in grading – Perhaps a test was improperly scored, a test question was unfair or unclear, ...
The grade was capricious – this means that the professor assigned a grade based on other factors outside of course performance. Discrimination – Unfair grading based on a professors opinion or other factors that were not based on course performance.
Typically no. Once you reach a grade appeal board hearing, the decision is final. Unless the board does not follow the procedure regarding hearings, the appeal board’s decision is final. You only get one shot. This is why I recommend hiring an education lawyer with grade appeal experience. I often help students write their written submissions and outline arguments to present in their appeal. These professionally crafted arguments and submissions will put students in the best position for success.Click here to read our practice area page on grade changes, appeals, and disputes. In order to qualify for a reduced assessment, you will need to prove to the satisfaction of the BAR that your property is currently over-assessed. This section gives you the opportunity to provide information that supports a lower assessment.
SCAR and tax certiorari proceedings must be initiated within 30 days of the filing of the final assessment roll or notice of such filing, whichever is later.
The BAR consists of three to five members appointed by the city council, town board or village board. The BAR cannot include the assessor or any staff from the assessor's office. Assessors, however, are required to attend all formal hearings of the board and have the right to be heard on any complaint.
In most communities, Grievance Day is the fourth Tuesday in May. However, there are exceptions:
If such a discussion does not result in a reduction in your assessment, and you still feel as though your assessment is too high, you may wish to contest your assessment.
