How do I allow guest access to my Blackboard course?
By default, guest access in Blackboard is disabled for all courses. If you want someone with an existing Mason username to be able to access certain areas of your Blackboard site, without having to be enrolled in the course, you can enable guest access. A user without a Mason username can be provided a link to your course.
The Original Course View most closely mirrors the course experience in Blackboard Learn 9.1. This view contains many of the advanced tools and workflows that instructors may be comfortable with. However, other users may find this experience more complicated and difficult to navigate. Highlights of the Original Course View:
Your institution must create the accounts and associate observers with students. Guests in a course can include guest lecturers, potential students, or other users who aren't directly participating in your course. Observers are typically assigned to follow specific users in Blackboard Learn without interacting with the system.
In the Customization section of your site's Control Panel, click Guest and Observer Access. Select Yes for Allow Guests. Click Submit. On the Course Menu, choose the downward arrows to the right of each area that you want guests to view.
What can a Guest access? Users enrolled as 'Guest' in a Blackboard course have very limited access to the course. They may be given limited 'view-only' permission to see specific content (e.g. lecture notes, course documents), and will be able to view content shared with the course from MS Stream.

Enable Guest access in your course.In the lower left Control Panel area, click Customization, select Guest and Observer Access.For 'Allow Guests' click the circle next to Yes.Click Submit.
The note “private” in your course title means that the course has not yet been made available to your students. To make your course available, follow the How to Make Your Course Available to Students instructions.
Open the link in your browser. Blackboard Collaborate is at the top of the screen. It mentions what session you are joining and there is a place for you to type your name. Select Join Session after typing your name.

Guest users in a Blackboard course will not automatically see the course link under their Enrolments tab as they log in to Blackboard. To enable them to enter the course and see the course content, you will need to take the following two steps:
Note: If you do not make menu items visible, the guest will not see any content, when they access the course. Instead, they will see "There are no available items in this course".
Some instructors add in the user manually into the course, but this step is not necessary. It will assist you if you wish to track which users are accessing your course through course statistics.
How can I use Guest access on a Blackboard course. Your Blackboard course can be opened up so any students and staff on the system may access your course as a guest. If you opt to use it, be sure you understand what this role means and how users can access your course. Read on to learn more.
Guests cannot interact with your Blackboard course, for example in terms of completing a survey, test or viewing the discussion board, or accessing a Virtual Classroom. This is a design feature to prevent abuse of student confidentiality. Also, integrations with other services such as Turnitin cannot be used by guests.

If you would like an external guest to have access to your course, you must request a sponsored account.
When you add a user with the Guest role and make certain content areas accessible to guests, those users can access course content, but not secure course areas like grades or assessments.
Select Yes for Allow Guests. The Guest role is not supported at this time in the Ultra Course View. If you want someone to have minimal access to your Ultra course, you must add them to your Ultra course and use the Interpreter role.
If UMBC has disabled guest access to features or course menu items, you cannot override the setting.
Note: Only static “content areas” (e.g., syllabus, course materials, etc.) have the option of guest access. Interactive course tools such as Discussion Boards, Tests, and Assignments cannot be made available to guests.
Now that your course and selected areas are open to guests, they can follow these steps to access the course.
To edit the course view for a specific course, edit the course settings. Go to Courses on the Admin Panel and search for the course you want to edit. Instructors can also enable anonymous grading to avoid potential grading bias. Robust tools. In the Original Course View, instructors can use the tools they're familiar with to communicate with students in different ways, such as wikis, surveys, journals, and blogs.
You can let instructors choose whether to use the Original Course View or the Ultra Course View. When instructors access their courses for the first time, they appear in the Original Course View, but the system shows them their options and allows them to choose. Instructors can preview their courses in either course view while a course is closed to students.
Open: You can open a course when you're ready for students to participate.
Text isn't recommended for the course card image. If you use text, center the text both vertically and horizontally in the image. Wrap longer text over multiple lines so the text isn't cut off in smaller breakpoints.
Change your view. You can view the Courses page as a list or a grid. In grid view, you can customize the image on your course cards.
You can't reorder courses in the list. Courses are listed in alphabetical order and grouped by term with the newest courses first. Your favorites appear at the top of the page.
