To transfer credits from another school to UWM, you must submit an Official Transcript from all institutions you want to have credits transferred from. These documents are used to determine how many credits and program courses you have completed as you continue your study at UWM.
Contact the Registrar’s Office via our online form at any time with questions. Most often, transfer credit comes through course credit earned at other institutions. UWM maintains over 90,000 (and counting) transfer equivalencies in our system from public and private institutions across the country.
See also Restricted Credit. The UW allows a maximum of 90 credits of lower-division transfer coursework to be applied toward a UW degree. Of the 180 credits required for graduation from the UW (some majors require more than 180), a maximum of 90 lower-division transfer credits are allowed.
To be awarded credit at UW–Madison, enrolling undergraduate students must have their official college-level transcript (s) sent to the Office of Admissions and Recruitment.
Credits completed at an international institution will be converted to UW–Madison credits using the average number of credits taken by a UW–Madison student (15 credits per semester). Total degree credits granted may not equal total course credits due to rounding in the conversion of fractional credits to semester hours.
In addition, students will be granted credit accordingly for the UWM courses specified below. A maximum of 72 credits can be transferred from MATC to UWM.
In a regular semester, the maximum credit load for undergraduates is 18 credits. A student must obtain approval for an overload from their academic advisor in Letters & Science.

Unless a restriction is stated in the Schedule of Classes, undergraduates may repeat a course only once, and only the higher of the two grades will be calculated into the student's grade point average (GPA). Both attempts will appear on the student's transcript.
120 creditsRegardless of the major you choose, all L&S students must complete these general requirements as part of the 120 credits it takes to earn a degree.
The standard minimum Grade Point Average for a UWM undergraduate is 2.0, which is equal to a “C” grade. The standard is based on your Cumulative (total) Grade Point Average. Graduate Students must maintain a 3.0 or better.
A letter grade of a D is technically considered passing because it not a failure. A D is any percentage between 60-69%, whereas a failure occurs below 60%.
The minimum graduation GPA requirement is a cumulative 3.0 (4.0 basis) or better in all work taken toward the degree.

In order to have it reevaluated, please visit the Course Re-Evaluation Request page and fill out the form. Follow the instructions carefully. It can take 4-6 weeks in order to process a re-evaluation request.
The Course Equivalency Service is available from March 1st to May 15th for Summer and November 1st to December 1st for Winter. This is an optional service for enrolled students who plan to complete summer or winter course work at another institution.
The courses, grades, and credits you earn abroad will be recorded on your transcript as UW-Madison study abroad work. If you study abroad through a non UW-Madison program, coursework will generally transfer as long as it is a university-level course similar in content to courses offered at UW-Madison .
Transfer courses that don’t have direct course equivalents at UW–Madison will transfer as elective credits within the appropriate academic department. For example, a course on the geography of Hawaii would transfer as geography elective credits because UW–Madison does not offer a course with that particular content.
The University of Wisconsin–Madison grants advanced credit for the successful completion of college-level course work while in high school and for high achievement on Advanced Placement (AP), GCE Advanced Level (A-Level), Cambridge Pre-U, International Baccalaureate (IB), and College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) exams.

To be recommended for a first or subsequent baccalaureate degree, a student must complete 45 of his or her final 60 credit s as a matriculated student in residence at the University of Washington campus where the degree is to be earned.
A student’s class standing is determined by the total number of transfer credits awarded by the UW, not by the number of years of college study or by the completion of an associate degree.
After an admitted student pays the New Student Enrollment and Orientation Fee, and shortly before the student’s Advising and Orientation session, the Office of Admissions completes a course-by-course evaluation of transfer credits.
Students will be required to complete foreign language study at the 103-level or to demonstrate language proficiency at the 103-level through an examination. Ten credits in courses emphasizing writing (W-courses or English composition) are required in addition to the 5-credit English composition requirement.
The UW subscribes to the statewide Policy on Inter-College Transfer and Articulation Among Washington Public Colleges and Universities, endorsed by the public colleges and universities of Washington as well as by the State Board for Community and Technical College Education, and adopted by the Higher Education Coordinating Board. Despite these restrictions, all of your transferable credit are listed under the Detail of Transfer Credit and may, with your adviser’s approval, be used to satisfy individual requirements for graduation. It may be helpful to think of your transfer credits as a “bank account” of credits from which you may draw.
Yes, the number of transfer credits cannot exceed 75% of the required technical college credits. Twenty-five percent of your technical credits must be earned at MATC. Your program plan will tell you how many credits you must complete at MATC.

College Courses. If you have taken courses at another college you may be eligible for credit at MATC. All General Studies courses taken at Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) are transferable to all other WTCS colleges. Certain high school courses in Wisconsin may be eligible for credit at MATC through the High School Articulation process.

A transfer specialist can do an unofficial review of your transcripts prior to admissions. Technical studies courses may require the review of program instructors and Associate Deans. An official evaluation occurs upon receipt of your MATC enrollment application, $30 application fee, and official transcripts.
You may have other credits that may transfer to MATC ; however, they may not apply as part of the requirements for your degree. If you change programs, you will need to contact a Transfer Specialist to request additional courses to be transferred.
