The AMCAS application typically opens during the first week of May each year for the following year's medical school class. Since AMCAS submission doesn't open until the first week of June, you'll have about a month to begin working on your application before you can submit it.
May 31, 2022When does AMCAS open for the 2022–2023 application cycle? AMCAS will open on May 3, 2022 and you will be able to submit your application as early as May 31, 2022.
When I first became involved in admissions over ten years ago, students who had a physician for a parent were still more likely to get accepted into medical school. Ten years later, the opposite is true. In the last few years especially, I have found that these applicants are less likely to get into medical school.
They found that a black, or to a lesser degree, Hispanic applicant, had a far greater chance of being admitted to medical school than white or Asian applicants with the same college grades and scores for the medical college admissions test (MCAT) (see table).
If you're okay with submitting your application before knowing your score, then late June/early July is okay. Taking it any later than that may delay your consideration by your schools, which is detrimental in a process where there are a limited number of interviews and seats.
Can I submit my AMCAS without having my MCAT score? Yes! AMCAS can and will process your application even if your MCAT scores are unavailable at the time of submission. AMCAS will automatically upload your MCAT score to your application once the scores have been made available.
The best time to apply to medical school is in June or July. August and September are considered late in the cycle. But with a strong application, you can still be accepted when applying late.
