Requests submitted through the online course proposal system are reviewed by the General Education Communication liaison, who is authorized to review and approve assignment of the Comm-B attribute to any new or existing courses. For Comm-A, the liaison may convene an ad hoc committee comprised of current Comm-A course directors and content experts, who will study the proposal and advise the liaison.
Directed or Individualized Study may not be used to satisfy GER.
Please note that UW-Madison’s unique approach to Comm-B, which integrates communication instruction within a wide range of disciplines, makes approval of course substitutions and transfer credit highly unusual. Students seeking re-evaluation of their transfer credit can find more information here.
Each course that your students take abroad is assigned a UW-Madison “equivalent” course. To establish UW-Madison course equivalents, students submit Course Equivalent Requests (CER) through their MyStudyAbroad account to IAP. We have designated individuals within each department on campus who reviews study abroad courses for equivalents.
Your students receive In Residence, graded credit for their courses completed on IAP study abroad programs. We establish credit and grade equivalent scales for every program and these are provided to students in their MyStudyAbroad account.
IAP posts courses, credits, and grades to your students UW-Madison academic record after their transcript/grade reports is received by IAP. Additionally, students must have submitted all of their CER requests to IAP. Your student will be sent a final Grade Report before final processing of their courses, credits, and grades.
Courses listed below, separated by subject, are active as of the Fall 2021 term. Courses can be updated three times per year, to coincide with the priority enrollment time period for upcoming terms.
Humanities: employing analytical, critical, and interpretive methods, “Arts & Humanities” courses teach a wide array of skills necessary to understand and analyze past, present, and future of the world around us.
Honors Only Courses (H): a course reserved for students declared in an Honors program only, taught by a faculty member who is an expert in the subject-matter of the course. It is designed to challenge students to actively participate; hence, the course content is often shaped by student questions and interests.
Elementary: a course associated with predominantly introductory material, are usually open to all students (including first year students). Intermediate and Advanced: courses with sensible prerequisites to reflect a gradual mastery of material. L&S Credit.
Accelerated Honors courses receive honors credit automatically in recognition of the amount and rigor of material covered in the course, often designed to combine two semesters of material into one semester. The enrollment system will automatically assign honors.

All students are initially admitted into the university and not into specific programs and majors. Admission to the university does not guarantee admission into a specific major program or college. In all cases, admission to intended majors is a separate procedure, application, and/or review process. Most programs have additional GPA, prerequisite course work, and/or audition or portfolio requirements.
