As part of its “Scouts First” approach to the protection and safety of youth, the BSA has established a dedicated 24-hour helpline to receive reports of known or suspected abuse or behavior that might put a youth at risk. To safely offer Scouting's outdoor program, however, you need a certain set of skills and knowledge – and that's why you're required to take Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (also known as “IOLS”) Training.

Scoutmaster Position-Specific training, course code S24, is the BSA's initial level of training for the top leaders of Boy Scout troops. It is designed for Scoutmasters, assistant Scoutmasters, and junior assistant Scoutmasters.
This training does not have an expiration date; practice makes for a more knowledgeable and experienced trainer. Participants will have the opportunity to be in front of a small group, which will offer feedback that will help improve skills as a trainer.

Adults accompanying a Scouting unit who are present at the activity for 72 total hours or more must be registered as leaders. This includes completing a criminal background check and Youth Protection training. The 72 hours need not be consecutive.
Beginning June 1, 2018, all adults who will be present at a Scouting activity for 72 hours or more must register as volunteers and complete a background check and Youth Protection training. This includes parents, merit badge counselors and any other adult who will be there for an extended time.

A: If the executive officer is not a registered leader, he or she is not required to complete Youth Protection training, although it is strongly recommended.
A: Only if they are registered leaders. However, it is highly recommended that any adult participating with your unit activities take Youth Protection training. Having them register as adult leaders is also highly recommended.
A: Yes. It is encouraged that adults take the training via the online module, but the instructor-led model is still acceptable as long as the most current version of the Youth Protection DVD (Item No. 610327 or 36121) is used and the end-of-course quiz is proctored by the trainer at the end of the training session.
