Attending Rutgers, or any university, will have both direct and indirect costs, which typically include tuition, enrollment fees, housing expenses, costs for meal plans, books and class materials, transportation, and personal expenses.
Tuition is the cost charged by the university for taking courses, and is often based on the number of credits you take. At Rutgers, tuition varies based on school affiliation, campus, and program. After registering for courses, Rutgers issues students an online term bill each semester, which includes all tuition and fees.
Many students at Rutgers receive some form of financial assistance through grants/scholarships, loans, and/or work study, and then use a combination of personal or family contributions or outside funding to make up the difference after financial aid.
Normally, students must have their permanent residence in New Jersey for a minimum of one year prior to the start of the term in order to qualify for in-state tuition rates. Residency is determined at the time of admission to the university.
The summer session student fee is charged to all summer session students in order to support student enhancement programs, services, and facilities, which complement and support the academic experience, such as library, writing centers and labs, health services, recreation centers, student centers, student events and concerts, and campus buses, among others.
Mandatory fees are required to support a wide range of programs, services, and facilities for Rutgers students that are not generally funded by tuition revenue. All fees listed below are charged per semester.
These charges will be included on the semester term bills for all students who choose to live on campus and/or dine at the university-operated dining facilities. Rutgers Dining Services and Residence Life services offer many choices for both meal plan contracts and on-campus housing.
