Firearm hunter safety courses are available in two different formats: online and traditional. Students 16 and older can complete the firearms safety course online at hunter-ed.com/maine. The cost to register for the online course is $19.95.

All U.S. states, provinces, and other countries that have mandatory hunter education requirements will accept the Maine Hunter Education Firearms Card. Likewise, Maine will accept Hunter Education certifications that are issued by other jurisdictions that meet official IHEA-USA requirements. (This is known as “reciprocity.”)
According to Maine law, all hunters must complete hunter education certification in order to acquire a hunting license, unless they can furnish proof of having possessed an adult license to hunt with firearms in 1976 or any year earlier.

Maine residents and non-residents under 16 years old must have a junior hunting license. Hunters ages 10 to 15 must be accompanied by an adult supervisor. Hunters under the age of 10 must be accompanied by an adult supervisor who is within 20 feet of the junior hunter.
All hunters age 16 or older must purchase the Maine Migratory Waterfowl Permit and the Federal Duck Stamp when hunting migratory waterfowl. Proof of Harvest Information Program (HIP) participation is issued at the same time as the state stamp.
A resident is a person who has lived in Maine for at least one year. Full-time students enrolled in an educational institution in Maine for at least one year may be considered residents.
