There is no expiration date on NRA training certificates. CGS 29-28 states only that the applicant must successfully complete an approved course of training.
Said colonel shall certify certain persons as firearms safety instructors and shall certify safety course curriculum. Such certification shall be for a period of ten years, unless sooner revoked by reason of unsuitability, in the discretion of said colonel.
Can I take the CFSC online? No. not even if you live in the middle of nowhere. There are websites out there selling practice tests, and study material.

What timeframe does the Firearms Permit remain valid? The permit will be valid for a period of twenty-eight (28) days from the date of issue. The permit holder must undertake the required course specified in Part 2 of the Legitimate Reason form within this timeframe.
This permit authorises a person who has indicated on a P650 declaration that they have previously been refused or prohibited from holding a firearms licence or had a firearms licence or permit suspended, cancelled or revoked, to undertake a Firearms Safety Training.

Effective January 1, 2015, the Handgun Safety Certificate program was replaced with the Firearm Safety Certificate (FSC) program.
