Make your Moodle course picture perfect by adding images. February 23, 2018 April 10, 2019 You know the saying ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’? Well when it comes to teaching and learning we think it’s true! Visual cues can help students retrieve and remember information.
When creating content in Moodle, especially web pages, it is often desirable to make your content with images visually appealing. Using the image align dropdown menu (pictured above in the image editor) can help you do this. After uploading and clicking to insert an image, you have the option to align the image in relation to the text.
You cannot copy and paste or drag and drop an image into Moodle. You must use the Insert/edit image icon on the toolbar, as described at right and in the guide linked below. Images will display in their "native" (original) size, so be prepared to adjust them for best fit.

The front page is the initial page seen by someone reaching a Moodle site after or before a login. Typically a student will see courses, some blocks of information, displayed in a theme. In the Navigation bar and Navigation block it is called "Home".

Adding a banner to your course homepage can help "anchor" the page. It also makes your course look welcoming and professional. There are two main ways to add a banner to your main course page in Moodle. The first method (covered in the first video) is easier, but less flexible.
To change the cover image, follow these steps:From the course page, click the gear icon, and then click Edit settings. In the “Description” section, drag-and-drop an image to the Course image area. Images should be sized to 281×150 pixels, though Moodle will crop the image for you.Click the [Save and display] button.

The teacher has favorite course image that is placed in every activity called "Moodle.jpg". This file was uploaded once and was 240 pixels wide and 60 pixels high. On the first page of a lesson activity the teacher wants the image to be only 120 pixels wide. Using the "Insert/edit image" icon the teacher sets their first dimension box for 120 (width) and the second box (height) at 30.

Acceptable image file types are .jpg, .gif, and .png. To insert an image in a forum post, click on Use advanced editor and other options before you begin typing your response. You cannot copy and paste or drag and drop an image into Moodle.
It's not hard to insert images in Moodle posts, but you do need to be careful about image size. Some important things to note about inserting images directly in Moodle textboxes such as forum posts, online text assignments and glossaries: Images must be saved as individual files in order to be inserted in Moodle.

when logging in to my moodle site, I notice that every course now has a nice looking image accompanying the tile outlining the course progress and summary. Can't find where to change those images to something I chose myself though.
Hello. Yes. You can change them from the course administration by clicking Edit settings and changing the uploaded image.
why aren't I surprised that you fired that reply. Thanks a lot (for being so active over all)!
Anyone is welcome to suggest translations in languages other than English on our translation site, https://lang.moodle.org/ (also accessed from the black bar at the top of this page )
Hi Jurgen, The current Dutch translation for this bit is 'Cursusafbeelding'. I agree with you that the previous one 'cursussamenvattingsbestanden' was a bit strange. One of the community translators for the Dutch language pack may have updated the string to better reflect the purpose.
Just to mention that I found this thread precisely because the original "strange" translation accurately represented the strange English phrase used by Moodle. How do we move this to get the original English wording changed to reflect the actual purpose of the upload?
I have a question about this. I am running Moodle 3.5 but anytime I try to add an image to my course, when I go to the dashboard the image is resized to a point that it is cutoff. My marketing department will not let this fly.
Hoping someone can share with me how to accomplish this. In course settings you can upload an image. I'd like to grab that image and use it as a background for a CSS element in a new theme I am working on.
You would probably need to treat it in much the same way as pulling an image from a theme setting - but instead of the couple of lines that detect the setting, detect it in (I think) the $COURSE global.
So I have been peeking at the course_renderer.php of the KLASS theme and I can see where it pulls in the image for each course to display on the frontpage.php. However, I am unsure how to make it so that it would be part of my header in a theme.
I think - using firebug - that you will find that is an 'element style' which means it has probably been added using a little snippet of code directly in the layout file for the courses, rather than in a css file or renderer.
I have done this a couple of times when creating custom themes using 2 different techniques without having to write a course format.
Would your technique be easier to implement than trying to dig out the Course image that you upload when creating a new course? Do you have any examples of how one would implement your custom block idea?
The grey box at the top of the course is where I am thinking the photo background should go. Off to the right of the Course Title in the grey box I am thinking it would be nice to show Course Completion and Course Grade for the user. This would appear over the top of the photo background and just below the User Drop Down.
