The Alabama Compulsory School Attendance Law (Section 16-28-3) requires children between the ages of 7-17 to enroll and attend school. Additionally, Section 16-28-12 of the Code of Alabama, as amended May 17, 1993, requires that any parent/guardian who enrolls a student in school be responsible for the child’s regular attendance and proper conduct. Effective July 1, 2000, an additional amendment to this section requires that each child who is enrolled in a public school shall be subject to the attendance and truancy provisions of this article except that any parent or parents, guardian or guardians who voluntarily enrolls their child in public school, who feels that it is in the best interest of that child, shall have the right to withdraw the child at any time prior to the current compulsory attendance age.
A parent, guardian, or other person having charge of any child officially enrolled in Alabama public schools (K-12) will explain in writing the cause of any and every absence of the child no later than three (3) days following return to school. A failure to furnish such explanation will be evidence of the child being truant each day he is absent. The child shall also be deemed truant for any absence determined by the principal to be unexcused based upon the State Department of Education’s current School Attendance Manual. Seven (7) unexcused absences within a school year constitute a student being truant for the purpose of filing complaint/petition with the court. The Interagency Committee on Youth Truancy Task Force recommendations known as the Early Warning Truancy Prevention Program timeline for reporting truancy will define the truancy status of any student as follows:

Residential School Assignment - Parents/Guardians may establish residence for purposes of school assignment by taking one of the following and registering at the residential zoned school.# N#1. Provide documentation of homestead exemption which identifies the head of household and the address of the dwelling used as the homestead; or#N#2. Provide copy of lease agreement or rental receipt which indicates the location of the residence, parties to the agreement and the effective date; or#N#3. Provide copy of a current electric, water or gas bill documenting the customer's name and address where the service is provided and a form signed by the parent/guardian stating that he/she and the student reside at the address on the document.#N#4. If you are living with someone else, you will need an electric, water or gas bill of the individual you and the children are living with, as well as, a letter from the individual stating your name and children’s names. If your children are high school students, the letter must be notariozed.#N#5. You must have custody and /or guardianship papers for the children that reside with you in order to register them.#N#Out-of-District Transfers – Requests are handled at the Office of School Choice, 30 E. Texar, Pensacola, FL#N#The parent (s)/guardian (s) shall fill out a form in the Office of School Choice requesting for their child (ren) to be transferred to a school out of their respective residential school attendance zone. The parent/guardian shall be responsible for submitting any additional information that may be needed.
A transfer may be granted for eligible students to participate in approved district academic or technical courses. Students granted a transfer must maintain passing grades, acceptable behavior, and attendance. Transfers for students who withdraw from the course prior to completion should be recommended for rescission. The Office of School Choice will monitor each transfer request for academic reasons and notify the home school of the numbers and academic reasons. Should the principal of the home school decide to add the specific course (s), then all students who requested a transfer shall be denied.
Transportation for students who are granted an out of district zone transfer shall be consistent with current transportation guidelines. Transportation for transfer students shall be on a space available basis with permission of the principal and limited to existing routes and stops within the attendance zone of the receiving school.

The Escambia High School riots were racially motivated nonviolent and violent demonstrations which occurred in varying forms between 1972 and 1977 at the then-newly desegregated Escambia High School. The centerpiece riot, which received the most publicity and was the most violent demonstration, occurred on February 5, 1976.
