Publishing a course is a course permission. If you cannot publish your course, your institution has restricted this feature. Publishing your course will send invitations to any users who were manually added to your course. Users added via SIS import will not receive an invitation.

Remove Class from Dashboard

Removing a course from the Dashboard simply removes it from that view, it will not remove it from the all courses page.

Deleting a Canvas Course

Unfortunately, we don’t delete courses from Canvas. We recommend unpublishing the course or simply following the directions above to remove it from your Dashboard. ​​​​​​​

Add a course to the courses menu

Once you log into Canvas, click on the button on the left-hand sidebar. A menu will appear where you will click on the All Courses link.

Remove a course from the courses menu

When logged in to Canvas, click the button next to the course you want to remove from the courses menu. The course will no longer show up in the favorites listing.

How to Publish Your Course in Canvas

If you are an instructor for a course, you can publish your course in the Course Home Page sidebar or from the Course Setup Checklist.

Step 1: Open Course

In Global Navigation, click the Courses link [1], then click the name of the course [2].

Step 3: View Confirmation

A message will appear at the top of your screen confirming the publishing of your course.

Note on How to Unpublish Your Course

If you need to unpublish your course, click the Unpublish button in the sidebar.

Course status notification on home page

If a course is unpublished you’ll see a pink notification message on the homepage. You can click the “Publish Course” button to immediately publish your course and make it available to students. We recommend waiting until your course is set up and ready to be released.

Select home page

The Syllabus replaced Modules as the default home page for all new Canvas courses.

Home page Options

Home page options include Course Activity Stream, Pages Front Page, Course Modules, Assignment List or Syllabus. Once you have selected an option, click Save. Please note that if you don’t select an option, the home page will remain as the Syllabus.

Publish a Course

To publish a course, click the Publish button from the right-hand sidebar from the home page. The course is published and available to students once the button appears green.
