Their job involves gathering footage and making sure the actors get along. But after the film shoot is over, the director's job is pretty much done; he or she hands over the footage to the editor. The editor is then tasked with taking out everything that doesn't fit in the story.
Though editors know what the director's vision of the film will be from the time they come on board, few seem to speak directly about a particular aesthetic vision, and all editors cut on their own, while the director is still shooting on set.
"An errand is an action that has no test in the other person," and so an action like delivering a message is not a good choice, among other reasons, "you do not have to look at your partner to see if you have accomplished it." If an action is too quickly and easily accomplished, it's not only boring for the actor to perform, but for the audience to watch.
