After a Canvas course's term has ended, the course becomes read-only for enrolled students. Instructors can no longer add or remove members using the People tool, send messages to students in the course, or edit course content. As an instructor, to perform these functions after the term has ended, use the Unlock Course button to reopen the course. You can later relock the course using the Lock Course button.
After the page automatically refreshes, your course will be locked and the course end date will be blank.
Once you have customized your course navigation menu to your liking, you can use Canvas’ Student View tool to look at your course site through the eyes of a student. This is an excellent way to make sure that your students will have access to the correct items in the course navigation menu. For more information, see Canvas Student View as a Tool for Faculty.
For both you and your students, the course navigation menu is your means of finding your way around your Canvas course site. However, the menu may not look the same for you and your students. When you view the course navigation menu of a site in which you are an instructor, you will note that some links are black, while others are light gray. Links in black are visible to, and usable by, anyone enrolled in the course; links in light gray, on the other hand, are invisible to students, and cannot be used by them. (There are also certain links that are light gray until you add content to the corresponding content areas, at which point the links will become available to students; Modules and Assignments fall into this category.)
Unlocked Objects. Objects that are unlocked can be managed by a course instructor like any other Canvas object. If the blueprint course is synced and the instructor has modified unlocked objects in the associated course, unlocked objects are not overwritten with the synced changes.
Locking an object in a course enforces the attributes defined in Course Settings. Any change to an attribute retroactively applies to all locked objects in the associated course. If an attribute is enabled for locked objects in the blueprint course, any locked attributes in the associated course that vary from locked attributes in the blueprint course will trigger unsynced changes in the blueprint course and override the associated course objects.
Instructors can view locked and unlocked icons in the Index page. However, they cannot manage the existing status of an object.
In Modules, only individual module items can be locked. Changes to the modules structure are triggered as part of a course sync.
Within an individual blueprint course, you can lock and unlock course objects and sync content for the blueprint course. If you are not sure how objects were defined for the course, you can view them in the Course Settings Course Details tab. Attributes for locked objects may be changed in Course Settings at any time.
Even if a given item in the module does not have an Available date set, putting a lock on the module will make the item locked from any access point (e.g., the Assignments area). There are also two ways to set a date when the item needs to be completed.
From the Modules page, you can publish anything simply by clicking on the circle with the line through it ; it will turn into a green check. You can learn about publishing items (link describes assignments, but other item types are the same) and modules in the Canvas resource guide.
Lock Until: this option appears only in the module settings. It allows you to lock everything in a module until a specific date. Items in the module and the module itself must be published for it to become available on the set date. Even if a given item in the module does not have an Available date set, putting a lock on the module will make the item locked from any access point (e.g., the Assignments area).
Using a “Lock Until” date is more efficient to set up and works well as long as no students need access to items in the module earlier. If you use “Lock Until” dates, you may need to leave major assignments out of the modules, which might not be ideal.

Students will also not be able to see it in the Gradebook. If you have legacy materials in your course, you want them unpublished; anything that is part of the current course must be published for students to access it. Unpublished items do not have a green checkmark; instead, they display a circle with a line through it.
The Red Warning Icon [2] notifies you that the entered grade is not supported in the grading scheme. Canvas will also display an invalid grade warning message when an invalid grade is entered.
The Visibility icon [2] indicates that there are grades within the assignment that must be posted before they can be viewed by students.
When weighted assignment groups are not enabled, the total column also includes a warning icon notifying you that the grade you see differs from the grade the students see because student grades on one or more graded assignments are hidden.
The Gradebook includes several icons and colors that may display in the assignment columns, assignment groups, and Total column. Icons and colors are simply gradebook indicators to assist you with course grading. All published assignments count toward a student's total grade unless they are excused assignments.
