1. Stay loose and focus on swing tempo. When you're playing a round and start to feel nervous, everything becomes quicker and you tighten up without even realizing it. This tightness causes tension in your muscles, which causes you to hit the golf ball poorly.9 Jun 2017
Joe Plecker, The Landings Club: Smashing drives requires speed and a square clubface. Developing the correct grip to match the release of the swing is the first step to swinging faster. When the arms and hands extend the club to release at impact, the club should be square to the path of the swing.
Jonathan Yarwood, International Junior Golf Academy: When you watch Bryson smash it into infinity and beyond in person, it really is incredible to watch. However violent it is, it’s organized violence. The sequence of events that culminate in the enormous speeds we are seeing is in good order. I wrote about it here, if you want to learn more.
Carol Preisinger, Director of Instruction at the Kiawah Island Club: Strength training can add power, but you must maintain flexibility. I see golfers create too much restrictive tension if they think “swing hard”, when swinging the club head “faster” (club head speed) is the goal.
Kellie Stenzel, Boca Raton Resort & Club: Seeing how Bryson intentionally bulked up to increase his power and also speed shows his level of commitment and determination. Recreational golfers can certainly learn from this, but they need to apply caution.
The same goes with putting. You want to have a 3/10 grip on your putting. The more grip pressure you have, the harder it is to make a natural putting arc. When you’re on the course and feeling the pressure, remember to always check your grip pressure. Also, make sure you are not playing the wrong size grips.
Try Adding a Waggle. Another great trick is adding a waggle to your swing. A waggle is a great way to help you feel like you’re moving and not stuck in one position. The more you stare at the ball with no movement, the easier it is to increase tension in your hands and forearms.
You can practice all you want but we both know that golf brings out nerves and shots you’ve never seen on the back nine. The key is knowing how to stay calm and collected during these parts of the round. If you get mad and flustered, you’ll almost always grip the club too hard, increase tension, and hit some bad shots.
Stupid question on the surface because I know the easy answer is just to not do it, but when I'm on the range I notice how I can stroke the ball perfectly with 75%-80% swings. There really isn't any distance loss and the ball feels pure off the face. When I go on the course I speed up and attack the ball way too much.
For me - and this is the one thing I've managed to fix - I forced myself to stop gripping the club so tight and relax my fingers/hands. Once my hands were more relaxed, so was my swing.#N#Stupid iphone. "Fingers/hands" not "Fingers hands."
if this only happens on the course, next time you play, take one more club than your distance dictates, then swing "easier"...keep doing it until you can't keep yourself from blowing shots over the greens...
Focus the transitin on beng smoooooth not slow. It's a mental thing. Smooth will give your rhythm an overall flow, gradual acceleration. Acceleration is key.
game is a paradox swing easy for the ball to go far and stay down for the ball to go up#N#easy sport
Best drill you can do is the alignment stick through the belt loops. It will fix your transition, and you won't be able to swing hard if you want to hit the ball.
Now that's a full turn! Short arm swing, big shoulder and hip turn. Club in front. Looks great.
A friend of mine sent me this video a few weeks ago after Tiger Woods played at the Greenbrier Classic. I want to show it to all of you to give you some perspective.
I believe the way to relieve this tension is a combination of two things. You need to get out on the course more, and learn to be more comfortable with an actual round of golf. Too many golfers are just not used to being on the course, and their nerves get the best of them because they don’t have enough experience.
