Courses may be taken either for credit leading to a Master of Materials Science and Engineering (MMSE) degree or for general information. The courses are taught live in Charlottesville in the afternoon or early evening to graduate students at UVA and transmitted simultaneously to enrolled students.

Experimental Methods offers a solid foundation in advanced topics in the areas of aerodynamics, structural mechanics and controls, coupled with hands-on experience with state of the art test and measurement equipment. Students focus in two of four specialty areas offered (Applied Automatic Control, Structural Dynamics, Aerodynamics and Design of Experiments) leading to emphasis areas such as , noise or flow control, , wind tunnel testing and aircraft systems test and evaluation This program is meant to prepare students to be immediately productive in the real world environment of research, development and testing

A brief history of Cardinal Education

The UVA distance education partnership program (Cardinal Education, formerly known as CGEP) began in 1983 with a live single point-to-point broadcast from UVA to the Cabell Library at VCU – a “receive site.” Students who could not attend a class session would be sent a VHS tape via postal mail to review the missed material.
