To drop a class after the first two weeks of the semester. Regular Session Students: The deadline for dropping a class (without a “W”) is posted on the SJSU Registration Calendar. After that date, a grade of “W” will be recorded for a dropped class and you must show serious and compelling circumstances for dropping the course. Please read the current Petition for Course Drop form carefully. Instructions and current Petition for Course Drop form can be found under Withdrawal.
A. Look on your unofficial transcript in the Self-Service section of your MySJSU Student Center web page; if the course has been dropped, you will see a “W” for the course grade. Refunds are handled by the Bursar’s Office.
For All Other Courses : Approximately two weeks before the end of Advanced Registration, MySJSU will allow students to enroll in a retake of a core course or elective. Check the SJSU Registrar’s Calendar for the specific date. Q. Why am I being blocked from registration? A. Some possible reasons:
Students do not need to submit any forms to formally withdraw from SJSU. We automatically cancel your student status if you do not enroll for two or more consecutive semesters †. However, if you are currently enrolled, you should formally drop all classes by the drop deadline (see calendar for deadline date) to avoid academic penalty.
Students who have completed at least one semester (as defined as Spring and Fall Terms) at SJSU are eligible for a One Semester Leave, which means you can skip one semester without notifying the university. You will receive a registration appointment in MySJSU for the semester following your One Semester Leave and you must enroll.
Students will need to email [email protected] the following information: Name use in petition, SJSU ID number, and state request to cancel drop/withdrawal petition. For late course drops, please include the course prefix and number.
However, if you miss this deadline, your transcript will show that you withdrew from the course, even if you sign up for a new course in its place. If you drop a class and later decide to retake it, you will have to retake the entire course, no matter how far along the course was when you dropped it.
Most colleges will give you specific deadlines to both add and drop classes. When you drop a class before the drop deadline, it's as if it never happened. This means that it won't show up on your transcripts and whatever grade you earned up until that point will disappear from your academic history.
If you're dropping a required course in your program, you may have difficulty registering in future courses that deem your current course a prerequisite. Dropping courses can also delay the completion of your degree, which means you may have to graduate at a different time than your friends and classmates.
Croskey notes that dropping a class is better than withdrawing, but withdrawing is better than failing. “A failing grade will lower the student's GPA, which may prevent a student from participating in a particular major that has a GPA requirement,” Croskey says.
When a student drops a class, it disappears from their schedule. After the “drop/add” period, a student may still have the option to Withdraw. Withdrawal usually means the course remains on the transcript with a “W” as a grade. It does not affect the student's GPA (grade point average).

Depending on the time during the semester that you drop a course(s), your aid may be adjusted. You must maintain satisfactory academic progress from one semester to the next or you may become ineligible for aid, including loans.
Serious and Compelling Reasons An extended absence due to a death in the immediate family. This applies to absences exceeding a week due to family affairs that must be attended to by the student. A necessary change in employment status which interferes with the student's ability to attend class.
Students need to pay careful attention to Add and Drop deadlines each semester.
Before classes actually begin, current students add and drop classes using the MySJSU web site at one.sjsu.edu/. No permission codes are needed during this “open registration” period. For more information and for dates, read our iSchool Registration Process .
