The consequences of this were serious and the question of who is at fault is largely a matter of perspective. I would argue that both characters played an equal role in the events that resulted from their association.

Virgil supplies the "loophole" for Aeneas to tell Dido that they weren't actually married. Roman readers would agree that the sacrifice of Dido is "regrettable" but necessary to the far more important destiny Aeneas has in going on to found Rome, for which he will need not an "African" queen, but a Roman wife (Lavinia). Virgil uses fire imagery extensively in Book 4 to symbolize the destructive passion of Dido 's love for Aeneas. "Dido burns with love." It is in her blood and bones: "The flame keeps gnawing into her tender marrow hour by hour." Yet, this would be too simple an exegesis in which every action is blamed upon the gods — choice, indeed, influenced the outcome of events. So Dido loses her land and life by the fate of Aeneas. Yet, by his own choice, he stayed in Carthage with Dido for a long time, never telling her that someday he would be off. Aeneas chose not to talk, and he chose to stay — he made the motions of being a husband, but, perhaps became bored with the mundane life in Carthage and longed to fulfill his destiny. Doesn’t this sound like a line? This is an excellent twentieth-century interpretation — Aeneas, the victim of a mid-life crisis. He had already moved slightly away from Dido by overseeing the construction of her city and all that was left to do was to make that final break.
Unfortunately for Dido, her relationship with Aeneas is fated to end tragically, partly because Juno and Venus interfere and partly because Aeneas must continue on his journey to fulfill his destiny. In Book IV, Dido knows that her relationship with Aeneas is fated to fail.

The story of Dido and Aeneas shows the determination of both Aeneas, and Jupiter, in ensuring that the Trojan hero fulfils his destiny and founds Rome. Alexander Pope famously described Virgil’s Aeneid as a ‘political puff’, written to praise the Roman Empire under the emperor Augustus. Virgil depicts Dido’s deep and devoted love for Aeneas in order to show how important it was that Aeneas founded Rome: he was prepared to sacrifice the love of a beautiful queen to ensure that he fulfilled his fate.
Aeneas’ attitude to his love affair with Dido can be contrasted with her own attitude. Whereas Dido chooses love over duty (to her kingdom and her people), Aeneas honours his duty over all else – even his love for Dido. He must do the gods’ bidding, and they command him to leave her behind so he can continue on his journey towards founding Rome. Although he leaves Dido reluctantly, in the last analysis there was never any doubt that he would choose to depart from Carthage and continue in his quest. It may have been fate that made him fall in love with Dido (and she with him), but a higher fate is calling him.

She has refused to entertain Iarbus’ proposal of marriage because she is mourning Sychaeus. But her loyalty to Sychaeus’ memory is compromised when she falls for Aeneas and takes him as her lover.
The moral of King Midas, of course, was not that he was famed for his wealth and success, but that his greed for gold was his undoing: the story, if anything, is a warning about the dangers of corruption that money and riches can bring. (Or, as the Bible bluntly puts it, the love of money is the root of all evil.)
Dido welcomes Aeneas and his crew, putting on a lavish banquet for her guest. In return, Aeneas regaled the Queen of Carthage with tales of his exploits in the Trojan Wars. The two of them grow close, which angers King Iarbus, king of a neighbouring kingdom, who had designs on Dido himself, and doesn’t like seeing her rebuff him in favour of some Trojan stranger instead.
The tragic love story of Dido and Aeneas has been told numerous times, and Henry Purcell famously turned it into one of the first English operas in the late seventeenth century. The opera Dido and Aeneas lasts an hour on average. Initially, it was a bit longer – its acts were preceded by a prologue. The music of the prologue has been lost (it’s good that the piece itself survived at least).
Nowadays, it is regularly presented in the best opera houses. You can find Dido and Aeneas on YouTube in different versions. I would recommend watching the operatic film in which Maria Ewing and Karl Daymond starred.
Aeneas is shocked by the gods’ demand. The prince is sincerely sorry for Dido but quickly agrees to do what is required of him. New adventures and accomplishments await the Trojan hero.

Dido’s exquisite singing is not in harmony with her courtiers’ jerky phrases. Nobody attempts to take her dismay seriously and even her friend Belinda chirps happily about a “growing empire” and “flowing pleasures” instead of taking an interest in what really worries Dido.
