Biochemistry is a rigorous field of study involving foundational and introductory courses in biology and chemistry with laboratory components, as well as advanced courses exploring topics such as cell biology , microbiology and genetics. Biochemistry majors also take mathematics and physics courses.

Becoming a pharmacist in the United States involves four to six years of education after college. Students must earn a Doctor of Pharmacy degree (PharmD) from an accredited pharmacy school, as well as a license to practice.
Pre-pharmacy students must take calculus in order to be admitted into pharmacy school. For many schools, like the Medical University of South Carolina, either general calculus or calculus for business is accepted. Statistics is required as well, as data analysis is an important skill to learn for the coursework in pharmacy school. Many pharmacy schools and pre-pharmacy programs also require an economics course.

Applicants must complete all prerequisites by the end of the spring term prior to their first fall term in the School of Pharmacy. Science and Calculus prerequisite course work must have been completed within the last 10 years of the semester in which the applicant intends to enroll.

Microbiology including a survey of distinguishing characteristics of microorganisms based on structural-functional relationships, taxonomy, growth and physical chemical metabolism and genetics. This should include an emphasis on infectious diseases, basic immunology, and microbial ecology.
Candidates may only defer for one year. If a candidate decides to not enter the program after the year deferral, they must complete a new application to be reconsidered for the program. All candidates must have paid the $400 deposit at the time they decide to defer. This deposit is non-refundable.
All transcripts must be submitted to PharmCAS regardless of the age or transferability of courses. The admissions committee considers all coursework completed and derives a cumulative GPA from all colleges and universities attended. Failure to reveal all transcripts will result in disqualification.
Pharmacy students take classes in English, psychology and sociology to increase communication skills and and deepen understanding of human behavior. These course are generally taken before entering pharmacy school, although some may be taught later in the program, according to the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacies. Pharmacists must become sensitive, tactful and professional communicators because they will be giving advice on everything from heart medicine to hemorrhoid cream.
Students learn the history of medicine and how various drugs were discovered. Many courses focus on the physiological mechanisms involved when a drug is introduced to the body. For example, students at the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy take classes related to physiological chemistry, antibiotics and biotechnology. Also included are courses like business administration, accounting and marketing, because many pharmacists manage a pharmacy in a retail store, hospital or clinic.
Before being admitted to a four-year Doctor of Pharmacy program, students complete two or more years of pre-professional course work with a science and math emphasis.
