The LPC Course is composed of 6 courses, 31 sections, nearly 1200 pages of text, videos and pictures. Completion time averages between 60 to 80 hours. To earn certification you must pass the LPC proctored exam (200 multiple choice questions).
The core modules of the LPC (which you take in February) are property, business and litigation. With regards to business I would say it is definitely advantageous to have some business concepts in mind before you start and a grasp of the basics for how a company is set up and its structure.
The course is not required, but it is the best exam preparatory tool available. The LPC covers six subject matter domains: ♦ Leadership Principles ♦ Business Principles ♦ LP Operations ♦Safety & Risk Management ♦Crisis Management ♦ Supply Chain Security.
The SRA has stated that the SQE will be rolled out from autumn 2021 and that anyone starting a law course before then (including the LPC) won’t necessarily have to do the SQE. So if you’re considering starting the LPC in 2021, have a gander at the information below.
Unless you’ve been hooked up by a commercial law firm that’s sponsoring you, it’s time to dig deep. Around £11,500 is par for the course at most providers but BPP and ULaw ask you to cough up over £16,000 for their London courses. One reason the SRA has given for the introduction of the SQE is the prohibitive cost for some of undertaking the LPC without sponsorship. The pricing for the SQE will indeed be significantly lower than that of the LPC, but you'll have to factor in prep courses as well, so the consideration of whether to take the punt on expensive courses will remain. For a comprehensive comparison of course fees look at the LPC providers table. For advice on how to fund your trip to law school, see our feature on How to fund law school.
The Central Applications Board administers all applications for full-time LPCs. The application timetable has been overhauled in response to the fact that several course providers have introduced January and February start dates. LPC admissions will now be processed on a rolling basis with the application form available from early October. Beginning early November applications are sent to law schools week by week and the course providers may make offers to students immediately.
In the past few years, Oxford Brookes, Aberystwyth, the University of Hertfordshire and Plymouth have all shuttered their LPC programmes, citing a decline in the number of applications.
It’s important to remember that the LPC is not an academic course – it’s vocational. Treat it like the first year of your professional life. The LPC requires good time management, organisation and preparation, and even though some providers have open-book exams, it's far from advisable to be sitting at your desk with an exam paper in front of you searching furiously through the textbooks at your side. Keep on top of things as the course progresses, and perhaps even think about sharing the revision workload with classmates.
It's not as stimulating as an undergraduate degree, but then again, it's not supposed to be; it’s meant to get you ready to start a training contract. With classes on semicolons and split infinitives, it can feel like you’re back at school, but you’ll pick up plenty of tricks and tips along the way, including:
With that in mind, the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) announced the replacement of the LPC with a one-size-fits-all, centrally managed Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE). This all-important ‘superexam’ comes in two parts, the first of which is in theory open to anyone with a degree . The SRA has stated that the SQE will be rolled out from autumn 2021 and that anyone starting a law course before then (including the LPC) won’t necessarily have to do the SQE.
As mentioned, Course Hero is a document-sharing platform centered mostly on previously written content by other students for their college assignments. There are three main features this website offers to college students:
For a price, you can get, see, and download as many documents you want to. You’ll also get between 10 to 40 questions for a 24/7 Expert Tutor.
The answer is yes, and no. While both have things in common, the levels of content curation and usage vary between each other. For example, Quizlet is a sharing platform, but here, others share their own study flashcards, guides, and memory games created through the website. In a way, Quizlet and Course Hero can complement their best features but are not a replacement for each other.
Some people are concerned that Course Hero promotes plagiarism and cheating. Still, this website, at its core, works more like a huge online study group created by former and current students rather than a source for original content that you can present as yours.
In a way, Quizlet and Course Hero can complement their best features but are not a replacement for each other. Quizlet offers study activities related to the content you will find in a specific class but not documents such as essays or notes.
You can rate any document in Course Hero like this and get unlock points to see other people’s contributions. Paid subscriptions offer you a more unlimited experience that does not require you to meet any of the above conditions. For a price, you can get, see, and download as many documents you want to.
You can use Course Hero and all its features for free as long as you meet the requirements to get unlocks. However, it is a tiresome process, and if you are an avid user at some point, you will get tired of submitting content and ratings.
The LPC is really important because you can’t go on to be a fully qualified solicitor unless you’ve completed one. It is graded in pass, commendation and distinction and enables you to have the skills to begin your training contract. The core modules of the LPC (which you take in February) are property, business and litigation.
During my degree, it was all about looking into and applying legal theory in depth.
The tutors are always around should you need to talk to someone, or else if you drop them an email it’s easy to organise a personal meeting. They consistently check on your progress and are genuinely interested to provide advice in areas outside of the LPC too.
In contrast, the LPC is it all about applying the law to a real-life situation and looking at it from a client’s perspective. It is not about coming up with an academically sound answer; you have to be innovative and find a way to meet your client’s objective.

During the year you undertake exams in a number of legal skills such as interviewing, advocacy, drafting and writing . The exam load of the first semester is pretty heavy and full on, so you have to make the most of any breaks you get, but thankfully the volume decreases significantly when you hit your elective term.
I found BPP has closed book examinations, which is something I personally prefer.
