My children used the CTY online course before. In my view, it is legit but not so unique. CTY was probably the first such systems. But now there are many others.
I haven' t personally used it, but I work at admissions at Johns Hopkins and we do give credit for classes you take with CTY. Furthermore, it gives high school kids a chance to experience a little bit of student life on a college campus, which is inspiring in itself. I'd highly recommend giving them a call and asking them as to what benefits CTY gives (google Johns Hopkins and call the number listed there and then ask to be transferred to the CTY department).
Colleges won’t care about them but they are great for improving student math skills and critical thinking. In terms of pre-college programs— it depends. Some colleges do mildly favor applicants in my experience from their own programs (maybe Brown, definitely Penn, Harvard).
Anyways, I recall that the CTY residential programs were fantastic; not just what the kids learned, but the whole summer-camp vibe was well-run and created communities of happy, well-educated kids.
