The Real Time Virtual Learning format ( RTV) combines In-Seat classrooms with synchronous (real time) online technology. Classes are held at a scheduled time and are designed to give students a convenient option when they might not be able to find the course on a local campus.
A didactic hour is defined here as one contact hour in a lecture course or 0.60 hour for each contact hour in a course designated as a laboratory course.
Live Virtual Lecture (LVL) The live virtual lecture format means the class meets online, at a specific date and time, using a streaming service. Students are required to be online during class time for lectures and other learning activities to experience real-time engagement with faculty and classmates.
Virginia Tech offers a variety of online or blended programs (graduate degrees and graduate certificates) to help you achieve your educational goals.
Each credit hour corresponds to a minimum of 3 hours of student engagement per week for a traditional 14-week course or 6 hours per week for a 7-week course. This time may be spent on discussions, readings and lectures, study and research, and assignments. Most courses at AIC are three credit hours.
Examples of the hour equivalency calculations: If a part-time faculty member is teaching three credit hours for the full 15-week semester, the work hours per week is 8.01. If a part-time faculty member is teaching three credit hours for 10 weeks in a standard 15-week semester, the work hours per week is 12.02.
A virtual classroom is an online teaching and learning environment where teachers and students can present course materials, engage and interact with other members of the virtual class, and work in groups together. The key distinction of a virtual classroom is that it takes place in a live, synchronous setting.
A virtual class allows you to complete your coursework at home. But, unlike online classes, virtual courses have meetings that happen at a regular time each week in a virtual classroom, like Zoom or Google Meet. You will have work during the synchronous online meetings and on your own in-between classes.
Online classes are typically a mix of video recordings or live lectures supplemented with readings and assessments that students can complete on their own time.
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, many Virginia Tech students, faculty, and staff are continuing to complete some or all of their work remotely. The following resources from the Division of IT will help you navigate the technology needed to successfully teach, take classes, and work online.
