Mark 6:3 names James, Joses, Judas (conventionally known in English as Jude) and Simon as the brothers of Jesus, and Matthew 13:55, which probably used Mark as its source, gives the same names in different order, James, Joseph, Simon and Judas.
I chose them because Jesus said them to Martha when Lazarus lay dead in his tomb. And I was to stand behind the old pulpit in front of a full casket. A corpse is a fierce reality. It demands that we explain these claims of Jesus — perhaps the most incredible ever spoken by a credible human being in all of history.
When Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life,” what he meant was that he had come to reverse this curse. “For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive” ( 1 Corinthians 15:22 ).
But Jesus only reverses the curse for all who will believe in him. That’s why he says….
God had warned Adam and Eve that if they ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil they would die ( Genesis 2:17 ). But the devil-serpent told Eve that God was a liar. They would not die. They would become like God ( Genesis 3:4–5 )! And they believed him and ate ( Genesis 3:6–7 ).
Because the fall of Adam and Eve was the failure to believe in God. “They exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever” ( Romans 1:25 ). This is a dishonoring, a treason of such magnitude that a holy God cannot tolerate and be righteous.
For John the Baptist said, “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him” ( John 3:36 ). Jesus has come to reverse the curse of death. And this free gift is yours if you will believe in him.

By using the word "today," Jesus was stressing the time of His promise— not the time He would be in Paradise. Remember, punctuation was not used in the inspired Greek that Luke wrote. It was added into the Greek and English centuries later by men.

At approximately 5 to 6 a.m., because Jewish law demanded two sessions of the Sanhedrin hear and try a defendant, a second trial of Jesus was held around 5 a.m. This second trial, however, seems little more than than a "rubber stamp" or automatic approval of the first trial's decision.
The Chief Priests, along with the Pharisees, visit Pontius Pilate out of fear that Jesus' disciples will secretly steal his body then claim he has risen from the dead. A little gambling would pass the time. They took his belt, sandals, outer garment and undergarment. There was a squabble over Jesus’ tunic which was woven all in one piece – probably a gift from a woman disciple or even his mother.
When Jesus first arrived at the place of execution, someone offered him a drink of wine mixed with myrrh. This was a narcotic that was said to relieve pain. Offering it to a condemned man was a charitable act. But Jesus did not drink it. The gospels do not tell us why. Later, the soldiers offered him sour wine.
There were probably four soldiers in the execution squad, half the basic unit of the Roman army – eight soldiers formed a unit known as the contubernium. Blind to Jesus’ majesty, they vied for the clothing of the man they crucified – it was one of the perks of their job.
The male disciples, on the other hand, were hunted men, viewed by Roman and Jewish authorities as accessories/supporters of Jesus. There were other people there, not so sympathetic: two men dying alongside Jesus, both of them criminals. the passers-by, some horrified, some mocking.
The two men beside Jesus were not petty thieves but violent criminals. They may have been connected to the insurrection Barabbas led (Mark 15:7). One of them was not so hardened. Like Pilate he recognised the innocence of Jesus, and Jesus responded, offering him a place in heaven that very day.
