Erin Hills is a course that was revealed rather than built. If you look closely at the surrounding land you can see all the natural ups and downs of the land. There were numerous trees removed for this course, but the hills, valleys, bumps and dips were almost all there already, they just needed the right grasses and a proper routing.

Erin Hills opened to the public for play in 2006 with $150 greens fees, pricier than planned but a reflection of the financial pressure Lang had put on himself. It wasn't just the $6.9 million he said he spent to build the course, or the $3 million he spent on a rustic-posh clubhouse.Jun 12, 2017

You still don't have to tip them. The lesson fee is plenty. Referrals are the best way to show appreciation. However, longtime students may get their instructors some sort of gift over the years or on a holiday.Aug 26, 2021

For instance, when it opened the course had sixty bunkers and now it had double that. Some were in goofy spots too, as in blind over the crest of hills. Again, the retail golfer grumbled. In October 2009, Lang sold Erin Hills to Milwaukee based businessman Andy Ziegler.Jan 25, 2022
How long does it take to play a typical round? Please plan on a four hour and fifty-five minute round of golf.
Erin Hills was built by Wisconsin developer Bob Lang, who used his own money to fund the course. Designers included Dr. Michael John Hurdzan and his business partner Dana Fry, and Ron Whitten.
Each petal was inspired from the iron art on the bell. The logo was designed by Brenda Williams, a competitive golfer from Minnetrista, Minnesota.
Andrew Ziegler purchased the course in 2009; as part of his commitment to upgrading the conditioning of the golf course, he said that Erin Hills would be operated on a "walking-only" basis starting in 2010. Unlike most modern courses, Erin Hills was not outfitted with paved cart paths.
The course includes a manor home specifically built as a hotel that includes a pub, and a refurbished barn available for private events. The grounds have been upgraded to include cottages for overnight stay. About four miles (6.5 km) to the east on higher ground is the landmark Holy Hill shrine, visible from the course.
The Erin Hills Golf Course is a hybrid set on rolling hills with a flavour somewhere between links and farmland. There are no trees to separate holes in this very natural layout set on a rugged landscape, and the views throughout the entire course are breathtaking. The fairways and greens are firmly protected by fescue grasses and/or a series of bunkers. The greens are huge and highly undulating. When you are on some of elevated teeing grounds or greens, you can see 360-degree views of the surrounding course. Erin Hill is a large-scale, wild, and windswept course. Although the course appears quite orthodox, each hole is very long and quite challenging, and the course offers each player a stern test of golf. This course hosted the Nationwide Amateur Open in 2012, and was selected for the 2017 US Open.
Erin Hills is the second public golf course in Wisconsin to host a major championship. The 2011 US Amateur was, for most people, the club's introduction on the world stage. The announcement of the 2017 US Open further cemented its place in American golf history.
Erin Hills is another Wisconsin golf course that has embraced ragged edge bunkers. The first hole is a welcoming par 5. The hole tilts left and there are wetlands left, thus favor the right. This is one of the few holes were a running approach can be successful.
Make no mistake, though, Erin Hills is golf on an epic scale, a big course in a vast landscape, where the overall length can vary from a modest 5,434 yards to a whopping 7,845 yards.
In having been on-hand and covering the 117th US Open Championship at Erin Hills I had the opportunity to observe the play of the world's best golfers. I had previously played the course in late '15 when the PGA Championship was hosted nearby at Whistling Straits.
Erin Hills is the collaboration of Hurdzan, Fry and Whitten. Originally opened in 2006, significant changes occurred in 2009 to get the course Open ready. First impression is of vastness, it looks big and plays big. However, due to the topography and geology it tends to play hard and fast.
