The two lovers live on opposite sides of the Hellespont. Hero lives in Sestos, where she remains a dutiful virgin to Venus, making sacrifices in honor of the goddess and maintaining her sexual purity. She makes her first appearance in the poem in a sacred grove, sacrificing turtledoves to the goddess.
One of the main themes of the tale of Hero and Leander is forbidden love. Hero, as a priestess of Aphrodite, was sworn to remain a virgin; therefore, a love affair was a violation of her vows and the rules of the temple. Another related theme is the wrath of the gods.
Hero and Leander is conventionally regarded as a fragmented poem, begun by Marlowe and completed by Chapman. Critical interest has centered, therefore, on defining the nature of the two parts and their relationship to one another; but I believe that there is a prior question to be answered, or at least asked.

The poem ends a few lines after this; Marlowe never finished the story. In his source text, what happens next is that Leander swims to Hero's tower again on another night, but is drowned by a storm; his body washes up on the shore beneath Hero's tower, she sees it, and she jumps from the tower to her death.

Perhaps his two most famous works were The Jew of Malta that was first performed in 1592 and Doctor Faustus. Part of the success of Marlowe's plays was the actor Edward Alleyn who was very popular at the time. Marlowe's poetical works included Hero and Leander in 1598 and The Passionate Shepherd of His Love.
What is known is that he attended Cambridge and received a Bachelor of Arts degree there in 1584. And this is where the first of the Marlowe conspiracy theories arise. Christopher Marlowe was educated at Cambridge and known for his wit and charm. After he graduated from Cambridge he went to London and joined the Admiral's Men, a group of theatrical players. He soon began writing plays, and those included "Tamburlaine the Great," "Dr. Faustus" and "The Jew of Malta." When he wasn't writing plays he often could be found gambling, and during a game of backgammon one fateful night with three other men he got into a quarrel, and one of them stabbed him to death, ending this most talented writer's life at the age of 29.

Only the barest facts of his biography are known: He was born in Stratford-Upon-Avon to a glover and leather merchant who was a prominent leader of the town for a time. He had no college education. He turned up in London in 1592 and by 1594 was acting and writing with the play group the Lord Chamberlain's Men. The group soon opened the now-legendary Globe Theatre, where many of Shakespeare's plays were performed. He was one of the most, if not the most, successful playwright of his time, and in 1611 he returned to Stratford and bought a substantial house. He died in 1616 and was buried in Stratford. In 1623 two of his colleagues published the First Folio edition of his Collected Works. As much as a playwright, he was a poet, and none of his sonnets is more famous than this one.

The long-haired Leander lives across the water in Abydos. During the yearly festival to Adonis (one of Venus' lovers) in Sestos, Leander and Hero first meet. Marlowe described it with a memorable ten lines, which is often extracted from the longer poem as its own, stand-alone love-poem.
