Researchers have identified the factors that result in grade inflation and proposed different schemes to address the problem. This paper evaluates the impact of higher-class average percentage score on the grade awards. Higher percentage scores are associated with higher student aptitude influencing instructor’s decision towards inflated evaluation. In this work, original students’ grades for different batches with different class average percentage scores were normalised based on published and proposed normalisation schemes. The outcomes were analysed, which revealed that the proposed scheme effectively addresses the issue of inflated evaluation.
The computation of Graduate Point Average (GPA) incorrectly assumes that grades are comparable across courses and instructors. GPA overstates the performance of students who elect an "easier" course of study relative to those who choose a more "difficult" course of study. This paper proposes a method of adjusting GPA and applies it to data from one cohort of undergraduates at Carnegie Mellon University. Adjusted GPAs are more highly correlated with students' high school Grade Point Average and with SAT scores than are the raw GPAs or GPAs adjusted using a prominent alternative method, Item Response Theory. A survey of students finds that the new methods' estimates of relative course difficulty are consistent with students' perceptions of relative course difficulty.
Course selection is a crucial activity for students as it directly impacts their workload and performance. It is also time-consuming, prone to subjectivity, and often carried out based on incomplete information. This task can, nevertheless, be assisted with computational tools, for instance, by predicting performance based on historical data. We investigate the effects of showing grade predictions to students through an interactive visualization tool. A qualitative study suggests that in the presence of predictions, students may focus too much on maximizing their performance, to the detriment of other factors such as the workload. A follow-up quantitative study explored whether these effects are mitigated by changing how predictions are conveyed. Our observations suggest the presence of a framing effect that induces students to put more effort into course selection when faced with more specific predictions. We discuss these and other findings and outline considerations for designing better data-driven course selection tools.
Learning analytics has been as used a tool to improve the learning process mainly at the micro-level (courses and activities). However, another of the key promises of Learning Analytics research is to create tools that could help educational institutions at the meso- and macro-level to gain a better insight of the inner workings of their programs, in order to tune or correct them. This work presents a set of simple techniques that applied to readily available historical academic data could provide such insights. The techniques described are real course difficulty estimation, course impact on the overall academic performance of students, curriculum coherence, dropout paths and load/performance graph. The usefulness of these techniques is validated through their application to real academic data from a Computer Science program. The results of the analysis are used to obtain recommendations for curriculum re-design.
