Most AP courses have an end-of-year exam, but a few courses have different ways to assess what you've learned—for example, AP Art and Design students submit a portfolio of work for scoring.
Most exams are 2–3 hours long. The first part of the exam usually consists of multiple-choice questions. You will choose 1 of 4–5 answer choices for each question and use a pencil to bubble in your choice on your AP answer sheet for paper and pencil exams.

Can I Take AP Exams Online in 2022? No. After a switch to online testing in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19, exams will be administered in 2022 as paper-and-pencil exams.
All classes are scheduled to last until the end of the school year, but as AP classes are widely regarded as “test prep” classes, many students and even some teachers lose the learning mindset after the exam. “Most of my AP classes continue teaching after the AP exam,” senior Rebecca Hu said.
Usually, a 70 to 75 percent out of 100 translates to a 5. However, there are some exams that are exceptions to this rule of thumb. The AP Grades that are reported to students, high schools, colleges, and universities in July are on AP's five-point scale: 5: Extremely well qualified.

In 2019, AP exams will be administered over the course of 2 weeks from May 6-10 and May 13-17. For a complete calendar of test dates, see the table below.
If your teen is not enrolled in an AP class but wants to take the test anyway, he or she will need to speak with the school’s AP Coordinator no later than March 1. Tell your teen to ask a guidance counselor or someone in the administration office to identify who this person is.
If your teen is gearing up for test season, one of the most helpful ways to support him or her is to be aware of the schedule. By noting important dates, like AP tests, well in advance, your teen will have plenty of prep time and won’t be surprised by how quickly some of these dates roll around. There’s a tendency to think of tests and assessments as a cumulative measure. Most students study first, and then take a test to see how they’ve done. In practice, though, taking an assessment before the studying even begins can be hugely beneficial for a test like the AP, when much of the material is specific content knowledge.
Unless finances are a limiting factor (AP exams can be costly), we recommend registering for the AP exams before the November 15 registration deadline. You’ll benefit from the motivation of preparing for the end-of-year exams.
Any changes to registration status after the November 15 deadline will incur a $40 fee. If you register for an exam that you ultimately decide not to take, there’s a $40 cancellation fee. If you don’t register for an exam and then you change your mind, there’s a $40 late registration fee.
