Become a NOLS Wilderness Medicine Instructor To become an instructor, you need to complete the NOLS Wilderness Medicine Instructor Training Course (ITC), a 7- or 10-day intensive training in Lander, Wyoming.
All NOLS Wilderness Medicine certifications are current for two years from the end of the course.

Once one has become a NOLS instructor in a discipline (let’s say hiking), that instructor can then take various seminars to demonstrate competency in a new skill set. There are seminars for all skill sets at the school: winter instructor seminar, horse-packing seminar, hiking seminar, and packrafting seminar, just to name a few.

Yes, backpacking is a cool way to see amazing views and get in shape. But the main reason I’m so passionate about it is because, unlike anything else I’ve ever seen, it strips away the BS. What does that mean? Throw a bunch of strangers together at, say, a nice restaurant in an urban center and tell them to get to know each other. People will small talk about their jobs, where they’re from, and maybe a little bit about their love lives. You’ll leave the restaurant and likely forget about everyone you met after a few hours. Throw a bunch of strangers together and make them trek through the wilderness? You will get to know those people—their innermost fears, desires, and dreams—better than you might know your close friends back home. You’ll know their vulnerabilities and their strengths. It’s incredible how quickly people's guards are forced to come down when you’re out in the field.

The Kameng River and the state of Arunachal are undergoing explosive changes. New infrastructure and government funding appear in juxtaposition to traditional lifestyles and a more remote existence, exposing a whirlwind of change. One mile reveals a community village with elders in historical headdress and woven backpacks and the next a group of women at a confluence grilling meat and dancing to modern tunes from a car stereo at a picnic.
Leo attended a three-day Single Pitch Instructor Course (SPI) in North Carolina hosted by Granite Arches Climbing Guides. The course consisted of discussing and practicing professionalism, knots and hitches, teaching, managing climbing sites from the base and the top of the climb, and assistance skills.
Dana and Nic spent four days in Murchison, New Zealand, training with the New Zealand Kayak School on the shores of the Buller and Matakitaki Rivers. From morning to night, they were immersed in whitewater kayak instruction: gaining more effective rolls and trying different styles, more advanced techniques, and honing their river-reading skills in Class 2-3 whitewater. The days were long, but the stoke was high, and thankfully the weather held out (mostly).
