Apr 11, 2022 · The IB Mathematics curriculum change was significant. The 4 old courses (Studies, SL, HL & Further) were replaced by two “routes” that can be taken at either a Standard Level (SL) or Higher Level (HL). The two routes are “Analysis & Approaches (AA)” and “Applications & Interpretations (AI)”. This creates 4 brand new courses: AA SL, AA HL, AI SL, AI …

I have taught, and am completely familiar with, both A-Level and IB. I can tell you without any doubt that SL maths is definitely equivalent to your typical A2. HL is similar to taking further mathematics A-level, and in some ways better.
The Mathematical Studies SL course "is designed to build confidence and encourage an appreciation of mathematics in students" who do not expect mathematics to be a major component of their university studies. Its curriculum consists of the following topics: Numbers and algebra. Sets, logic, and probability.
IB Math Analysis and Approaches (AA) is all about theoretical math. The module keeps analyzing abstract math theories at its foundation. IB Math AA covers topics like advance calculus and integration to train students in the discipline of pure mathematics. This particular module has been divided into two levels.
Course Description: This course is essentially a first-semester College Calculus course. It starts with a thorough introduction to limits and quickly builds on limits to develop conceptual understanding of differentiation and integration.
General Description: IB Math HL 1 is the first of two years that prepare students to take the IB Higher Level (HL) Math exam. The course covers all topics typically covered during the first two quarters of college calculus. In addition, it also covers additional IB required topics.
IB SL Maths includes sections on basic algebra, probability, statistics, and trigonometry, as well as actual calculus, and the calculus in the IB exam is a lot easier than in AP Calculus, which delves deeper into calculus as a whole and leaves behind basic algebra and pre-calculus.Aug 15, 2017
Math is pretty straight forward; IA SL is the easiest, moving up to AA HL as the hardest. Hence, students weak at Math should choose the IA SL level of math. However, from a statistical POV, Further Math HL has the highest 7's, with 35%.Dec 17, 2020
Math AI is easier in my opinion. You get to use calculators for all of your exams. In Math AA there is a lot more calculus and a portion of your exams will have to be done without a calculator.
The IBO suggests: Maths AA for students interested in mathematics, engineering, physical sciences, and some economics. Maths AI for students interested in social sciences, natural sciences, medicine, statistics, business, engineering, some economics, psychology, and design.Oct 13, 2020
What is IB Math AA HL? IB Mathematics Analysis and Approaches (AA) Higher Level (HL) is one of the four math courses introduced in the current IB Mathematics curriculum (2021-2027).
Mathematics: Applications and interpretation This course is designed for students who enjoy describing the real world and solving practical problems using mathematics, those who are interested in harnessing the power of technology alongside exploring mathematical models and enjoy the more practical side of mathematics.
Mr Dhall noted that, while parts of certain IB courses may be “conceptually harder” than the HSC, a less competent IB student could still perform better than a more competent HSC student, because the ATAR derived from an IB is more likely to scale up.Apr 15, 2019

The IB Diploma Programme (DP) is a rigorous, academically challenging and balanced programme of education designed to prepare students aged 16 to 19 for success at university and life beyond. The DP aims to encourage students to be knowledgeable, inquiring, caring and compassionate, and to develop intercultural understanding, open-mindedness and the attitudes necessary to respect and evaluate a range of viewpoints.
The IB DP mathematical studies standard level (SL) course focuses on important interconnected mathematical topics. The syllabus focuses on: placing more emphasis on student understanding of fundamental con-cepts than on symbolic manipulation and complex manipulative skills; giving greater emphasis to developing students’ mathematical reason-ing rather than performing routine operations; solving mathematical problems embedded in a wide range of contexts; using the calculator effectively. There is an emphasis on applications of mathematics and statistical techniques. It is designed to offer students with varied math-ematical backgrounds and abilities the opportunity to learn important concepts and techniques and to gain an understanding of a wide variety of mathematical topics, preparing them to solve problems in a variety of settings, develop more sophisticated mathematical reasoning and en-hance their critical thinking.
IB Mathematics: Analysis & Approaches Standard Level (SL) and IB Mathematics: Analysis & Approaches Higher Level (HL) (which are revised versions of the previous IB Math courses) are two of the toughest classes in the IB Diploma Programme curriculum, so it's no surprise if you need a little extra help in either class.
The Analysis & Approaches courses cover a lot of material. With so much material, you can't afford to fall behind because you won't be able to catch up. You'll need to master the subjects during the school year in order to excel on the IB Math SL/HL papers.
