University Division students should read the University Division's Pass/Fail Option website and follow instructions. All students should fill out the pass/fail option forms in full, obtain the appropriate signatures, and return them to the office of the deans of their schools by the published date.
All students new to IU Bloomington will register during open registration, usually during New Student Orientation. Your registration appointment is scheduled based on your current class standing. Students with the greatest number of hours at their current level or in their current program will have the earliest appointments.
Most pass/fail courses are electives. If you want to take a class as pass/fail, you’ll need to get a pass/fail option form from your academic advisor. Complete the form and return by the pass/fail deadline.
Consult with your academic advisor prior to enrolling in any type of I-Core prerequisite outside of IU Bloomington, as many course requirements have recently been updated. Also, refer to the Transfer Course information page for the intricacies of taking a course away from IUB.
-don't get a 'request to withdraw' due to having lower than a 50 average in the term. -fail the course marginally in order to keep your course average high enough to continue to the next term, and not set you a year behind, but still require you to properly learn the material for when you write the supplementary exam.
You can replace a grade for a given course no more than twice, and each attempt counts towards your 15-credit limit. You must complete, sign, and submit the replacement form before you graduate. You must be pursing your first bachelor's degree from IU.
Consider repeating the course. Over 90% of colleges allow undergraduates to take a failed class again to improve their grade. Depending on the school, the new grade may replace the F on your transcript — or both grades may appear, with the new grade replacing the F in your GPA calculation.

If you fail, it's usually smart to retake the class. Most colleges will allow you to retake a class one time and replace your new grade with the failed one. This looks better on transcripts and for financial aid purposes.
The Consequences of Failing a Class A failing grade will likely hurt your GPA (unless you took the course pass/fail), which could jeopardize your financial aid. The failure will end up on your college transcripts and could hurt your chances of getting into graduate school or graduating when you originally planned to.

A passing grade grants students credit for an academic course. Students who do not earn a passing grade do not receive credit on their transcript for that class. Each college sets its own minimum passing grade. At some schools, a D-minus is the lowest passing grade.
Yes, you can get education loan even after failing in first semester. However, there is no guarantee that you will get the education loan since it depends purely at the discretion of the bank from which you are seeking education loan.
The failing grade will NOT calculate in your GPA, but it will still show on your transcript. On your transcript, an "E" will show to the right of your failing grade to mark the course as "Excluded".
If you can maintain your school's minimum GPA for receiving financial aid, a failed class won't end your aid. It will only hurt if you can't rebound after a big enough drop.
