The purpose of the Science Program of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy® is to provide a personalized, competency-driven, inquiry-based, problem-centered, and integrative learning environment which promotes scientific habits of mind and gives students a firm knowledge base in the fields of biology, chemistry, and physics.
Each semester students must take a minimum of five academic courses (2.5 credits) for a letter grade (not Pass/Fail) not including Fine Arts, Wellness, and Independent Study courses. Students may enroll in a maximum of nine courses each semester including academic courses, Fine Arts, Wellness, SIR, and Independent Study.

These are two-three month (or shorter in summer), mostly asynchronous online courses designed around a hot topic in STEM, which may include a book read, documentaries/TED Talks, and other source material. In Research, Inquiry Skills and Experimentation (RISE) students learn how to conduct independent research and report their findings. In this school-year-long, asynchronous course students conduct an in-depth study of a science topic of their choice.
STEM BITES are IMSA-created, quick activities introduced by our mascot, Darwin the bearded dragon, and his furry friends. STEM Plans are activities students can do with a parent or other adult. There is no cost to download/access.
ALLIES is a youth development service-learning program in which students learn STEM content by serving others. It prepares high school students to deliver inquiry-based, hands-on science, technology, engineering and mathematics activities (STEM) to younger students.
SITE – Summer Internships for Tomorrow’s Educators—provides college education and STEM majors with training, mentorship and support, feedback, and classroom opportunities to teach IMSA-created, hands-on, minds-on STEM content to students in IMSA’s summer programs.

The Computer Science IB course focuses on computational thinking and how computers work. It also includes practical activities, such as programming. This class is a good option if you plan on studying computer science or a similar subject in college. It's offered at both SL and HL.
There is no standard science subject for high school seniors. Most high schools do not require seniors to take a science class, but if you choose to, you can take an elective. Electives are offered on a wide variety of subjects, including astronomy, human biology, and zoology.
Of the biology, chemistry, and physics AP classes, none is automatically the " best" to take; all are rigorous courses known for having challenging AP exams (although both Physics C tests are usually viewed as more difficult than Physics 1 and 2 because they require knowledge of calculus).
IMSA Certifications indicate individuals have met prerequisite qualifications and passed an examination — from an impartial, nationally-recognized association — to determine they are qualified to perform specific technical tasks.
IMSA highly recommends enrollment in a moderated review program but it is not required for certification. Those participants who wish to review the material in a self-study process and challenge the examination may do so ( purchase manuals online ).
