Phlebotomy is when someone uses a needle to take blood from a vein, usually in your arm. Also called a blood draw or venipuncture, it's an important tool for diagnosing many medical conditions. Usually the blood is sent to a laboratory for testing.
Phlebotomy is one of the easiest health-care professions to enter, with minimal training and certification requirements.
When the certification prerequisites are in question, you should know that the ASCA requires a student to complete 40 classroom hours, 100 hours in practicals, and 100 successful venipunctures while the NPA obliges a student to complete 160 hours in the classroom, as well as an internship in a facility or lab.
Program Completion Completers of the phlebotomy program will be eligible to take a national certification exam and become licensed by the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners. Successful completion of the program is NOT contingent on the student's passing any certification exam or licensure criteria.
