The Focused Topic Core Course requirement may be satisfied by taking ANY upper-division Social Welfare elective class (any class other than the core classes-110, 112, 114), or approved graduate (200-level) elective course in Social Welfare. SOC WEL electives or approved alternative courses are generally offered each Fall, Spring and Summer.

The course is grounded in a brief weekly lecture that sets out the theoretical, historical, and cultural contexts for particular innovation practices, but the majority of the class involves hands-on studio-based learning guided by an interdisciplinary team of teachers leading small group collaborative projects. Upper Division status when you begin teaching. Have an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher, and maintain this GPA during the semester you are teaching. Have previously taken the course, its equivalent or a more advanced course, with a grade of A- or better.
Freshmen are not advised to take upper division courses (#100-199) or graduate level courses (#200+) in their first year. We also discourage students from taking more than 2 technical courses in a semester (such as Chem 1A, Math 16A, and Bio 1A).

The Berkeley Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences major (EECS), offered through the College of Engineering, combines fundamentals of computer science and electrical engineering in one major.

Generally, upper-division courses are not recommended for freshman students. No graduate course credit is allowed for upper-division courses even if additional work is completed, but a limited number of upper-division courses may be applied in fulfillment of graduate degree requirements.

The Department allows CS majors to satisfy at most three upper division course requirement at another four-year institution . CS minors may satisfy at most one upper division course requirement elsewhere. ISF 189: Introduction to Interdisciplinary Research Methods (4 units) – required for all applicants who apply to the major after June 1, 2014, but not a prerequisite to major declaration.
All ISF majors must take a Theory and Practice course from the ISF 100-series (ISF 60, ISF 100B, 100C, 100D, 100E, 100F, 100G, 100H, 100I, 100J or 100K) or from a list of approved courses taught in various departments across campus.
Additionally, no more than two graduate-level courses can be used to fulfill requirements for your B.S. degree. Undergraduate students must submit a petition to the department to use graduate-level courses to fulfill requirements.
Students must complete one course about engineering ethics or the social implications of technology. This practice and theory course provides interdisciplinary perspectives from new media, anthropology, religious studies, and sociology to read cultural expressions--from religious behavior and rituals, to speech acts, and political action. We will read theoretical texts, look at art, and produce performances and videos. We will create installation environments for live performances, generate 360º video, and build VR platforms to explore the boundaries between the virtual and real worlds. The class goal is to develop critical and self-reflexive approaches to video and performance art production as a laboratory to reimagine community, citizenship, power and responsibility, and to produce new ontologies and new modes of being in this world.
Courses may align with an instructor’s own research, they may propose topics responding to contemporary events and issues, or they may offer a specialized skill. Primarily intended for advanced undergraduates and graduates in Art Practice but open to others.
Game studies has five core elements: the study of games as transmitters of culture, the study of play and interactivity, the study of games as symbolic systems; the study of games as artifacts; and methods for creating games.
Course titles that include an XB or XBW designation denote UC Berkeley–equivalent courses. All UC Berkeley–matriculated undergraduate students (except those in dismissal status and those who have already completed a UC Berkeley undergraduate program) will automatically have all Concurrent Enrollment and Fall Program for Freshmen coursework included with grade points on their Berkeley campus transcript as stipulated by Academic Senate regulation A208. Matriculated UC Berkeley students are bound by UC Berkeley grade and course repeat rules.
