Mar 25, 2008 · representation of the “non-traditional” Philippine heroes such as Sultan Kudarat and its effects on creating a proper representation of nationalism for the Philippines. As aforementioned, the Philippines has a diverse history and it would be unjust to selectively pick and choose which parts of the nation’s past should be recognized.
FILIPINO NATIONALISM -is the bottom line;sine-qua-non for the common good of the native (Malay/indio)Filipino majority. Nationalism must precede any plan/action in dealing with globalization. EDUCATION- being educated is beyond just being schooled towards a profession or practical vocation; we need the Humanities/liberal arts to develop/apply CRITICAL ANALYSIS/THINKING to understand, identify, plan, act & safeguard the needed fundamental/systemic changes towards economic/political progress, social justice and social transformation. GOVERNMENT - its raison d'etre is to lead/serve the native majority, foster nationalism via its institutions, ensure the masses are critically literate to have real democracy. FREEDOM & DISSENT - free thought is necessarily aggressive and critical; we protect freedom to discover truth; we encourage dissent not for sentimental reasons, but because we cannot live without it. PATRIOTISM is NOT: "My country, right or wrong;" but "if right, to be kept right; if wrong, to be set right!"
For this reason, nationalism believes in economic, political, scientific and cultural exchanges with other countries but it will be careful and selective, always placing priority on the needs and welfare of the Filipino people. As a national ideology, nationalism must permeate every aspect of Philippine life.
Nationalists believe that the resources of our country should be for the benefit of our people today and in the future. Since our economy is increasingly being dominated by foreign corporations with the active intervention in their behalf of their governments, nationalism is necessarily anti-imperialist.
Their goal, their ideal was independence . They equated independence with a better life, and rightly so, although they had no clear idea of the economic dimensions of the independent society they aspired for beyond the immediate demand for land to the tillers. Nationalism at that time was mass nationalism.
It was part of the agreement of American occupation that in 1946 , the Philippines would become independent of the US again. At that time, Tagalog became the official language of the Philippines, this change having been decided about ten years later and having begun already to be implemented in the educational system.
The Islam religion was brought to the Philippines in the 14thcentury (Bautista). It was spread throughout Mindanao and also reached into Manila and Tondo before the Spaniards came to the Philippines and stopped its spread. This spread could have also contributed new words and concepts to the existing languages.
However, Rizal, an important Filipino hero at the time who had been killed because of his involvement with the revolution, had brought a lot of attention to Tagalog by writing many papers in Tagalog and writing about the grammar, etc. (Frei, 28-29). The period of Spanish rule brought many borrowed words into the Tagalog language from Spanish.
Some examples of borrowed words are the Spanish words for fork, spoon, knife, table, God, holy spirit, Jesus Christ, and blessing. The new Republic of the Philippines did not last long until American occupation began. The Americans began English as the official language of the Philippines.
After losing to the United States in several land and naval battles, Spain released the Philippines and other colonies to the US in exchange for US $20 million, as agreed upon in the Treaty of Paris of 1898. During the negotiation of the treaty, the American Anti-Imperialist League opposed the annexation of the Philippines.
Peace talks with the Moro insurgents have brought some stability to the islands, but the government also must deal with the New People’s Army, a Communist insurgent group inspired by Maoist principles. The Philippines and China are also in a dispute over sovereignty for the Spratly Islands.
Scholars argue that the execution of Rizal inspired a broader fight for freedom from the Spanish government. Led by heroes such as Bonifacio, the Philippine Revolution began in 1896 and included numerous battles against Spanish forces on multiple fronts. By 1898, as Spain was fighting to quell the uprisings in the Philippines, it became embroiled in the Spanish-American War. Composed of social, political, and economic luminaries of the era (for example, activist Jane Addams and former President Grover Cleveland), the league organized a series of publications criticizing the US government’s colonial policies. Mark Twain, prominent author, wrote for the The New York Herald in 1900:
Although the details vary in the retelling, one Philippine creation myth focuses on this core element: a piece of bamboo, emerging from the primordial earth, split apart by the beak of a powerful bird. From the bamboo a woman and man come forth, the progenitors of the Filipino people. The genesis of the Philippine nation, however, ...
The Philippine-American war began on February 4, 1899, when American soldiers opened fire on Filipinos in Manila. In the first years of US occupation, the battles were fought between the new US colonizers and Filipino guerrilla armies tired of existing under any foreign rule.

In correcting the interchanging use of “patriotism” and “nationalism” in texts, the Grammarist explains that patriotism is based on the notion of the “goodness” of the government and its people.
Nation-states are people with a common past, half-history, half-myth, who live under the rule of a government in the form of a state. Liberal nation-states are collections of individuals whose rights as citizens are guaranteed by the government.”.
Harvard University historian Jill Lepore explains in an op-ed for the New York Times: “Nationalism is an abdication of liberalism. It is also the opposite of patriotism. To confuse nationalism with patriotism is to mistake contempt for love and fear for valor.”.
