Students can apply for an Extenuating Circumstance Withdrawal after the course adjustment period has passed. Extenuating Circumstance Withdrawals are reviewed by a committee and are granted only for unforeseen and uncontrollable events and are over and above the course of everyday experience.
A graduate certificate consists of 9 or more credits of focused student in a specific area. ECU has over 70 graduate level certificates that students can earn either stand-alone or as an add-on to a degree. Students should discuss certificate options with their graduate program director.
The year you begin your graduate program is the catalog year you will use to determine your program requirements. The state of North Carolina does require many students, including graduate students, to demonstrate enrollment in an insurance plan or to buy the available insurance for students from the university. Eligibility requirements for health insurance requirements are always posted on the Student Health Services website.
A project is an academic experience overseen by the graduate program and does not require submission of a document to the Graduate School, although there could be document submission requirements within the program or department.
A student may take 7 semester hours each summer term or a maximum of 14 semester hours over the entire summer without restrictions. With the written approval of the Office of the Registrar via [email protected], a student who has earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 in all work may take extra hours.
If, at the end of the semester that the student is on probation, the cumulative GPA remains below a 2.0, the student is suspended from the university unless the student’s GPA for that semester is at least a 2.5, in which case the student remains on probation instead.

A student’s participation in the work of a course is a precondition for receiving credit for the course. Students are expected to attend punctually all lecture and laboratory sessions and field experiences and to participate in course assignments and activities as described in the course syllabus. Absences are counted from the first class meeting after the student registers. Students registering late are expected to make up all missed assignments in a manner determined by the instructor.
The instructor’s attendance policy will be provided to the class on a syllabus distributed at the first class meeting. Class attendance may be a criterion in determining a student’s final grade in the course if the instructor provides a written statement to this effect in the course syllabus.
When a student withdraws from a semester, it does not mean that he/she withdraws from the university, nor does it affect any previous or future semesters. You are only withdrawing (dropping classes) from the semester you indicated on your myECU portal or your withdrawal form in Etrieve (if applicable).
If you withdraw past the refund date, you will still be charged for your classes. I took classes at a career tech center.
The reprieved work is not removed from the student's academic record. Graduate students and post-graduate students not pursuing a 2nd bachelor's degree or first-time teaching certificate will not be considered for an academic reprieve.
No grades are removed from a student's transcript. If a student retakes a class, it is recorded in the semester in which he/she re-takes it. A student may retake up to four courses in which he/she previously made a D or F (not to exceed 18 hours) to have the first grade removed from the Retention GPA.
The Textbook Loan Program allows eligible ECU employees to apply to borrow required textbooks from Dowdy Student Stores for classes taken at ECU for themselves or eligible family members. In order to participate in the program, specific criteria must be met and a Textbook Loan Application Form completed.
An eligible employee is allowed to take a total of three credit-bearing classes each academic year (fall, spring, summer I, 11 week, and summer II) without being charged tuition and required fees (university fees, educational, technical fees, and health service fees.) If additional courses are taken, the student will be charged for additional courses at the appropriate level of block hour billing. Remedial math classes are taught on a contractual basis between ECU and Pitt Community College; therefore, the special fee for these classes is not subject to the waiver. Study Abroad programs are excluded from waiver eligibility.
The UNC System Board of Governors, Policies and Procedures, Section 1000.2.2, has adopted regulations to implement the waiving of tuition and fees for qualified faculty and staff.
An eligible employee utilizing a faculty & staff tuition and fee waiver should make every effort to enroll in courses offered during non-business work hours. If a course is taken during business/working hours, employees will be required to use annual leave or adjust their work schedule.
The payment requirement shall not apply to an employee who is eligible under this policy at the time of enrollment in a course and is later reduced in force (SHRA) or separated for budgetary reasons (EHRA) prior to completion of the course. This exception does not apply to the end of a time-limited or term position.
