To calculate a student's grade point average (GPA), CCAC assigns grade points to each of a student's letter grades (A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0) and these are then multiplied by the credits assigned to the class. Grade points are then added up for all classes completed in a term and divided by the total term credit hours completed. This result is the term GPA. Students can calculate their cumulative GPA by adding up the grade points for all the courses attended and dividing this number by the sum of credit hours completed.
This means that a student has permission from an instructor to postpone the completion of required coursework for a period not to exceed eight weeks into the following term.
The deadline for an official withdrawal from a course is the ninth week of a 16-week term. Shorter terms have a prorated W date. After this deadline, the instructor must give the student a grade.
Failed grades will count in the calculation of a student's GPA. W (Withdrawal). This means that a student has officially withdrawn from the course. Any actions or pending actions of academic misconduct may prohibit a student from withdrawing from a course.
Developmental courses are not calculated into the graduation GPA. Students must earn C grades or better in all developmental courses to register for the next course in the discipline or to use this course as a prerequisite for a course in another discipline.
All permanent academic records are housed and maintained by the Registrar.
Standard of Evidence: the College uses the “preponderance of evidence standard”, or “more likely than not”, as the standard for proof of whether a violation occurred. In the student due process hearing and employee grievance process, legal terms like “guilt, “innocence” and “burden of proof” are not applicable.
CFCC requires written authorization from the student prior to release of academic records. A minimum of 48 working hours will be required by the College to access the requested academic information. The student may inspect, copy, and review his/her records in the Registrar’s Office. There may be a charge for copies.
Attendance Policy. College instruction is designed for students to learn by way of class attendance, and regular attendance is a key to academic success. Attendance is based on class meetings and calculated from the first class meeting, not based on when the student enrolls in the class.
Rights of Faculty. The faculty of the College has a legitimate educational interest in a student’s academic records. Therefore, access to those records is authorized by the institution. Along with this access comes certain obligations and responsibilities.

The College’s online services employ Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), providing authentication of the server, encryption of all data sent to and from the server, and integrity checks of the data. SSL is used for myCFCC, Blackboard, WebAdvisor, and Google Apps.
If the instructor agrees, the students and instructor must sign the "Incomplete Grade Contract.". When the required work is completed within 30 calendar days after the beginning of the next term, a grade will be submitted for the "I" grade.
An "N" grade indicates the student attended classes and made satisfactory progress but did not complete all course requirements. A "Z" grade indicates the student was registered for class but never attended. To challenge a grade the student believes is incorrect he/she must contact the instructor as soon as possible.
Dean's List. To be eligible for the Dean's List in any term, students must have: Six or more credit hours of college level course work. A grade point average of 3.4 with no grade below a C for that term. Courses for which students earn grades of X, IP, I, W, P, N, S, or Y are not computed into total credit hours attempted.
If the form is not filled out and you do not schedule flight slots for the next semester, you will be issued a grade of "F" and you will be dropped from the flight lab. If you do not complete the course in the allotted semester time limit, you will need to reenroll in the course in its entirety.

All P graded courses. Coursework with an R designation after the grade indicates that the course is a developmental course (AR, BR, CR, DR, etc) not included in grade point average.

Grades will be posted Friday, May 29, 2020 and faculty will grade as they usually do: A, B, C, D or X (for incomplete). F grades will now become NP for No-Grade Pandemic. After receiving grades, you can switch any grade of A, B, C or D as follows: A, B, or C grades can become P grades, for pass. P grades are not counted in your GPA.
P grades are not counted in your GPA. The credits are counted for courses with a P grade. D grades can become an NP. These do not count in your GPA. This course will need to be retaken if it is required for your program or transfer. All grade changes need to be complete by Monday, June 15, 2020.
Grades are the means by which students assess their progress in course work. Students can expect to be graded frequently and in a variety of ways in each course. Grades are not assigned in many continuing education classes.
When an incomplete is recorded in a semester, the calculations for the semester grade point average will not include the credits for the incomplete class and no credit points will be recorded for the incomplete. The incomplete will appear as an “I” on the student record and transcript. For the purpose of calculating the grade point average, the credit will not appear in the total credits attempted or earned. When the incomplete is resolved, the calculation for the semester will be updated.
Students who have earned 12 or more credits at CSM are eligible to be considered for the dean’s list. At the end of the fall, spring, and summer sessions, the Registrar’s Office will publish a list of those full and part-time students who have completed at least six credits during the semester and have earned a term grade point average of 3.5 or better. The Vice President of Academic Affairs will notify students in writing of their accomplishment.
Career and Technical Education (CTE) is a means to begin a technical course of study while in high school. CTE courses are taught in the high school and can be applied toward college credit. In a CTE program, a high school student can begin his or her course of study in high school and continue to the College of Southern Maryland. These courses coordinate high school and community college programs, assuring that graduates acquire the technical knowledge and skills required in today’s complex workplace for a particular program. CTE students complete a planned sequence of courses in high school, which articulate to CSM and can be applied to designated letters of recognition, certificates, and associate of applied science degrees in a career field. Please note transferring articulated high school credit courses may not be accepted by the transfer institution.
Academic suspension results when a student on academic restriction fails to achieve at least a 2.00 GPA during the current enrollment period. Academic suspension precludes registration for any courses for a period of at least one semester (fall or spring semester). Students returning to the college after being suspended for academic reasons will be placed on academic restriction (P7) upon their return.
Prerequisites or corequisites may include specific college courses, certification from a particular organization or agency, employment in a certain field, etc. The intent of prerequisites or corequisites is to ensure that students have the level of skill and knowledge that will assure them a reasonable expectation of success in the course. If the student does not satisfy the prerequisite or corequisite criteria prior to the start of the higher-level course, the College has the right to remove the student from the higher-level course.
A community of higher learning can make its maximum contribution only if high standards of integrity, courtesy, and accomplishment are maintained by every member of the college. Responsibility for achieving this goal falls upon students, faculty, and administration alike.
The biggest issue might be that students don’t know the words that they are about to read. This doesn’t mean that they can’t engage in high cognition—it just means that they need more support with components of the reading process and need to be pre-taught those tiered vocabulary words.
By having students use different colored markers, the teacher can tell who is writing what, such that he or she can provide additional supports in future lessons. From this standpoint, all students get to participate and work at a level that allows them to grapple with a complex text.
