Is Capella a good program?

"Capella Clinical Mental Health Counseling is an excellent program but because of the intricate nature of counseling supportive and protective factors should be in place. Faculty advisors are sometimes out of state, the administrative communication to students about changes in Instructors is poor. The worst thing is the tech support which seems to have dipped in standard since 2017. Firstly the customer service is horrible, either waiting for over 15 minutes to get the call responded to, and customer service representatives only seem interested in getting surveys out for themselves. The university seems to pray on poor minority students to keep its status but then offers little or no practical support. Students are expected to work a 30 hour a week internship with no pay and find the means to support themselves or family. Students are not required to go through personal therapy, so many have serious issues and are then unleashed on the vulnerable populations they will serve. Note that a 'For Profit' university focuses on just that and that appears to include less than ethical practice. One of our instructors was behaving rudely and bizarrely to students. A background check produced numerous criminal convictions yet she holds high ranking at the university."

Most of my department's building burned down last night, so let me take a moment for a PSA: keep several backups of your data!

Maybe this sounds a little alarmist, but really -- you never know what could happen. You are early-career academics and you don't want to lose years of your hard work, or data for future projects. We lost our personal desktops and a portion of the department servers/storage, and for some of us, those were the only backups in existence.

My journey to mastering out (I passed my defense today!)

I wanted to share my story for anyone else that is stuck in a toxic work environment.

School helping depression

I know that grad school can make mental health issues worse, but I wanted to add a positive story in here. I was struggling with severe depression for all of 2021 and it was impacting my mind’s ability to think and process, and even my memory in ways that were very disturbing to me.

Conference presentation was intense

I’m in the social sciences and I presented at a national (virtual) conference last week. I presented one of my (admittedly unpolished) dissertation chapters. This was my first time presenting at a national conference so I attended some sessions beforehand to get a feel for what our session would be like.

Would a school I rejected accept me two years later?

When I applied to grad school it came down to two schools that were comparable in many aspects. The final decision I made was for the community at one school over the other. I still love the community here but my adviser is intolerable. He’s childish and mean in ways advisers aren’t normally.
